Elk hunting in the CRG
« on: September 02, 2013, 09:19:16 PM »
Hello folks, I'm relatively new to the area and was curious if anyone would be willing to help point me in the right direction? I introduced myself on the turkey hunting forum last spring, but I'm from MN and grew up hunting all over the midwest. My big game experience is limited to primarily bow hunting for whitetails. A lot of the basic skills transfer to elk hunting, but I have a couple questions about elk hunting in the Columbia Gorge area. Any other relevant advice is welcome and appreciated!

First, I'm dropping the bow and looking to pick up a rifle...it's kind of a sad day, but I think I'll need all the advantage I can get. I really don’t have all that much money to spend, but I was looking at buying a 30-.06 or a .300. I was looking at the Savage model 110 and 111. Anyone have any experience with Savage? Would you go for a  30 .06 or a .300 (I’ll also be using it to hunt deer).

Now, I just need to figure out an area to hunt. I was looking at the Mt. Adams wilderness/and or rec area. I’ve looked at a couple spots that look promising and have elk sign, but they are at about 5500 feet. I’m worried I might get snowed out before the season ends? How hard does that area get hunted? Do many folks hunt the north side of Adams? I’m assuming the further you hike the more you get away from people? I’ve also run into some elk in the Indian Heaven Wilderness. That area looks like it could be good, but I hear it gets hunted pretty hard?

I was also looking at hunting in the Wind River area. I was told there might be some elk around Paradise Ridge? This option is appealing because I know I probably won’t get snowed out.. I’m completely open to any suggestions on where to focus my scouting efforts. This is probably my biggest ??? heading into the season. I’m willing to cover lots of ground and am prepared for a backcountry hunting trip. However, if I’m able to have easier access to elk hunting, that’s something I’d definitely be interested in.

Sorry to be that guy asking for advice on an area to hunt, but all I’m looking for is a hint in the right direction.

Thanks for any advice!
