Roost Tree?

Have been lookin around the place at some of the bigger pine trees and was thinking something could be done to them to get the turkeys to roost in them instead of the neighbors.  What do turkeys look for in a roost tree? Do they like to fly up ,down,or about level with the roost? I would think they would want an open area to perform mourning strutting and stuff? Any words of wisdom on this subject would be much appreciated!

My experience has been that they like an open area somewhat level with the top 1/3 of the tree to roost in. And that the trees can't be to thick. That's for getting up into the tree. As far as getting out I have seen them pitch out to all different elevations.

Thanks for the info. That's what I was kinda thinking. I will probably climb up and cut some branches out to open a couple trees up.

I usually see them approach the roost tree from the upper side and fly in.  You can sometimes catch them jumping to higher limbs even up to the uppermost parts of the trees.  They usually like more open, level tree branches .... but I've seen and heard them breaking thru thicker "brushed" limbs (Little Buck got his color back about 1/2 hour after they flew into the tree he was sitting against).

They do fly out in any direction, but usually into an opening large enough they can look for possible predators before flying out, and feel that they can either run or fly away if jumped.

That's a good thought on looking for predators before flying down.   Still walk-in our place and thinking about all the angles for the right roost tree before I go to all the work of climbing and cutting.
