NE late arch elk
« on: October 16, 2013, 10:27:57 PM »
anybody on here have any success with the late archery ne elk hunts?  this year is nov 25- dec 8th.  last november i was finding lots of elk tracks in the snow in unit 121 on the same mountain where ive found elk from april - november and my hope is that i can locate them again in same area this year, and find a way to close the distance to put an arrow in one.  would like to hear from anybody who has tagged bulls on this hunt before, any advice or tactics you used that worked.  thanks

just follow the tracks, and tag the first legal elk the wolves put down for you  :tung:

It used to be any elk in the late season up there which made the hunt worth while. WDFW really screwed archery guys up there by making it any bull. As if it isn't hard enough trying to stalk an elk in (most of the time) crunchy snow and thick brush, now u gotta pick out antlers.

My advice would be to setup a stand/blind and bait em once u locate a good area. That's your best bet if the conditions aren't perfect.

thats pretty much what i was thinking i would have to do for a chance at success, is find the tracks again, figure out where theyre bedding, and set up a giant pile of alfalfa corn and apples.  ill be using a primitive longbow so i wont shoot over 20 yards.  i probably could but probably isnt good enough for me.  my hope is that elk will behave over bait in a similar way to the whitetails around here.  when i put food out for the whitetails in the winter, the bucks just hog it all and wont let the does get near it.  if theyre not putting out why let them eat right?  since the late elk arch is bull only, im hoping that the bulls will dominate the food like the bucks do.  i guess we will see huh?
