Weyerheauser access
« on: December 13, 2013, 03:16:12 PM »
Last year I drew a cow tag for the Margaret and Weyerheauser sent me a packet for access during my hunt. This year I have a friend that drew the Winston cow tag and he has not received anything from them yet. Does anyone know if they sent these out this year or are they just letting anyone in?

The packet (letter) I received for Margeret this year basically said gates would be open and to call the hotline to find out which ones would for sure be open, which is what I would have done anyway.

I just finished three days of hunting Margaret for a cow.  I hope you have better luck then me and everyone else I ran into.  I hunted all over.  Most of the good sign was off the 2500 road this side of the Green River which is the border of Winston and Margaret.  In three days I saw ONE elk in Margaret and two in Winston a nice bull and healthy cow on the Winston side of the Green.  I didn't know Winston was open or I would have made a run at them.  Today I glassed probably 40-50 head of elk on the Mudflow.  Pretty sure that is where they are all hiding.  A good chunk if not all of the mudflow is elk escapement area which I found out the hard way.

:yeah: Similar findings here. I actually had a couple decent chances at bulls last week. But I feel I got very lucky. Between what I found in September and this late season, I can't believe how few elk seem to be around. There were some stretches of road with snow that had no elk tracks for miles. Nothing like it used to be in there.

They cannot keep giving out 500 cow tags for the winston every year and hope that our resource survives. Not to mention what the MH get to do in August. How do you say revenue.????

:yeah: They have destroyed one of the largest herds in the state and are doing nothing to slow down the decline. Between hoof for and all the antlerless tags, I'm done hunting the St.Helens herd. Everyone should send WDFW a thank you letter for destroying one of the strongest herds we used to have in this state.  :twocents:

I'd like to see WEY make a rule closing down the red arrow roads to motor vehicles. Just walk in only. That would go a long way to giving the animals some breathing room.
