I love having them in close, though I never am able to shoot them, always seem to miss. Closest one in actually was sniffing my foot. I threw 7 shots at it and never even came close. Watched it run off more than 500 yards. The last 7 years or so, seems harder to get them in close. They seem more reluctant.

Closest I've ever had was about 20 feet. 22-250 makes a big exit that close, especially when you hit the shoulder. Going to take the 870 with #4 tomorrow just in case.

My closest one was about 10 yards away when he tried to sneak out of his bed as I was still hunting through and area for bears. He got up and slowly walked off into an opening about 30 yards away and blam 300 wsm on a shoulder shot put him down quick.
The other was on a private farm field just getting farm chores done and I always do my usual looking in the pasture to see if anything is down there and sure enough had 3 yotes chasing the animals around so headed to the house got the 17 hmr and made a stock. By the time I got in position the two made there way back in the timber and one had actually bedded down behind a fallen tree in the edge of the field. It got up and starting walking away slowly at 35 yards with no idea I was there and I anchored it on the spot with a high shoulder shot. I'm sure if I would have waited the other two would have shown back up but I had work to get done. The one I got was a manjey one. The other two were beautiful.

My first of this season was a hard charger at thirty feet, and my 'scope was set on nine power.....that was fun! The shot was good, no exit wound with 50 gr soft point in .222. She wasn't coming directly at me either, but was skirting a depression just in front of my set. I put it right on the point of her shoulder, no time to think, just reacted. I was actually on another coyote that was charging in at about 150 when she "appeared" right in front of me. Man I love predator calling!

Got one at 10 yards, and one at about 5 feet both in the same day. The first I was hiking through the edge of a field backed by pretty good sized reprod. I was seeing a ton of turkey crap so I sat down and gave about 10 clucks using my voice and had a big female come in wide open. Got her in the head with the 10/22 at 10 yards coming through the back fence. About 3.5 miles later (same day probably 6 hrs later) I was hiking through an old clear cut, and I hopped up on a big blowdown spruce. I crossed a marshy area on it and hopped down and when I looked up there was a coyote laying in a deer bed in the sun wilth his eyes closed at 5' or so. I thought maybe he was sick or dead, so I gave a whistle and he sat up and I drilled him again I was using the 10/22. Didn't even use the scope he was so close. He was just a yearling dog and not very big. The only regret I have about that second yote was I had a .357 in my shoulder holster and I would have had plenty of time to pull if I could keep quiet enough.

I had one hit the end of my barrel with it's tail one time. Shot a fair number from 10 or 15 ft.
I don't like them that close for shooting, but it is a rush for sure.

The last coyote I shot wasn't as close as your guys but it wasn't real far either. Another trip while bear hunting I was walking an old skidder with the 300 wsm. The yote popped out at about 30 yards looking my way. I froze on the side of the skidder and he new something wasn't right so he started trotting straight away at a good pace. By the time I squeezed a shot of he was about 65 yards and it was a pretty brutal shot. He dropped right there but the tail blew about 10 feet into the air falling right next to him. Couldn't believe what I did. But when I got up to it I realized that I could fix the damage being as it popped off right at the base. I can tan it and sew the tail right back into place. Good ol Texas heart shot.
Here is a pic of it skinned with the tail set back into place.

I have put my barrel in the side of one and pulled the trigger, can you say messy, shot a bobcat I called in at my feet with a 50 cal muzzy{washrag}..the .17wsm to their heads works great at close range..I shoot 99.9 percent in the head..I just follow them until they stop and erase the memory bank...put one in my wifes lap last weekend but it went away unharmed she was a little rattled, lol She is hooked Now..

Closest kill was 9 yards. Closest encounter was touching. I caught a young coyote pup while driving hay truck in bluestem. It was a young pup probably mid July. Dam thing stunk to high hell but was quite submissive. I kept thinking it was going to bite me but nope. I shared my lunch with him before letting him go. I bet the first person to call that dog in killed him close lol.
