Not FTF, but different filters for different scenarios. Won't take all three on a trip.

Katadyn does better with dirty water but it's bigger. My guess is depending on where he's going and the potential for water. Plentiful flowing water, Sawyer. Getting water from an elk wallow(priceless) the katadyn gets the nod. Am I close? Steripen is a backup?

Actually the steri pen will be for trips where we have clean flowing water like last year. I don't think he's planning on packing it all the time.

Katadin is field serviceable as well.

pretty close. sawyer for most trips. steripen for plentiful water/day hunting/winter hiking/pretty much any trip where i dont feel like carrying over 1 liter
katadyn for elk wallow/trips where its likely to clog and need field serviced

FTF, why the EMR II over the Nomad? Why not the Nomad and Camp Bag that you can drop at the main camp? Just volume or other features? What fabric and lid did you buy?  Do you have the bikini or the duplex?  BTW, it makes a difference knowing who is talking on different forums by the use of the same names, so thanks for keeping the same handle.  For example, I respect what Luke Moffat and Littlebuf have to say on Kifaru's forum mostly because of their posts on other forums (Luke uses a different handle, but allows his real name to be used as well).

I went with the nomad and camp bag all in multicam with a long hunter lid. When I drop spike camp (camp bag) I will be ready to go hunting.  All my day pack gear goes in the two wing pockets and a long side zip on the bottom.  Incredibly versatile setup for me.

My biggest change will be the guy carrying the pack. Drop 10#, convert 10# more to lean muscle. Oh, and trade the tent and sleeping on the ground for a hammock. Way better on my aging back and body.

mine is on a bikini frame. i prefer it to the duplex i used to have. i find it more comfortable with backpacking and camp only type loads (where id say 90% of my time is) vs the duplex where it shines is 120+. dont get me wrong, the bikini handles the weight fine and i packed 3 long 110+ loads with it last season, just not as well as the duplex.
if i lived in alaska or killed on every trip id run a duplex.
now for the bag, i do like the nomad, but it would be a 2nd pack, for dayhunting/meatpacking only. it would not be, or isnt, my choice for extended trips. i like a big bag, not a seperate camp bag. weight  is also a concern. my dt1 on bikini frame was only 91oz so i had a hard time switching from that anyway. in the end the sleek profile of the emr2 for dayhunting is what won me over. as well as the center zip for cramming bear hides will be  8) other than the main bag vs empty space, the emr and nomad have the same layout.
i got it in the 500d highlander with standard lid. i already have a longhunter lid but cant see needing it with this bag. im in process of scalping every little unnecessary thing off right now to make the weight penalty less for the switch.
funny you mention luke, he and i were having a convo about this bag last week, were both in agreement that its the best bag theyve ever come out with for every and anything. especially packing "hydration" if you saw his vid  :chuckle:

Did we get confirmation that the wings were actually bigger on the EMR ?

Shaun, I share the same sentiments as FTF. I run a standard lid with a bikini.

Not sure where you live...FTF and I live in and around orting...you could check it out if you'd like. We also generally do a weighted pack in Enumclaw on Wednesdays.

I like the duplex for hauling meat. I haven't used the bikini frame yet.

Dreamingbig, I agree on the way you intend to use it.  Do you ever bivouac hunt and consider how you'd use the pack for that? Mostly, I drop camp and then day hunt, but 20-30% of the time, I carry (all day) enough to sleep out 2-4 nights and the Nomad's empty center then requires some bag/Camp Bag to carry camp gear.

FTF and Silk, Thanks for the info and offer. I live near Battle Ground, so Wednesday weighted hikes are out for me.  I thought you were both getting the EMR from reading the Kifaru thread. I did see Luke's packing video with "hydration."  I also saw his much longer film of that raft trip. Very nice.  He and Becca get some great trips in each year.  He is a smart man to have hooked up with Becca.

If the bikini hauls 120lbs well, then that is probably sufficient. I was thinking duplex, but I doubt I ever haul more than 120lbs at a time. Heck, I don't even want to haul that much.

Shaun,

I've had 120 lbs on the bikini, and it handled the weight fine. Scott has had that weight multiple times last year packing out his, his wife's, and my bear.
