Musket caps on nw explorer
« on: February 07, 2014, 08:22:55 AM »
Hi all, I noticed in a couple old threads people mentioning musket caps on their nw explorers.  I've bought a couple different nipples and all of them make closing the breech very difficult.  In fact, even after sanding down the nipple, the breech indents on the cap, the nipple presses into the explosive, and on some caps they'll set off when forcefully bringing the trigger up.

For those that have made the switch, do you use a shorter breech plug?  Looking for ideas.  The #11's are okay, but I'd like the ability to use caps.

It seems to me that T/C says that musket caps are not compatible with the NW Explorer. I've got one of those rifles, and it seems like i was interested in trying musket caps at some point.

Not saying it isn't possible, but I don't think it's designed for a convenient switch.  And I've always felt that the hammer on that gun is lacking smack-down power, so I'm not sure a larger cap would help reliability. (IMHO)  CCI #11 mag caps, and Dynamit Noble WRS caps (green german caps) have lot's of bang.  If the cap goes, so will the charge….assuming it's not wet or whatever.

Indeed, I'm looking to go against T/C's advice.  They told me the Omega thumb-hole stock wouldn't work with the explorer either -- it does.  They, like most gun-makers these days, are so afraid of litigation that the mere mention of modification gets them all worked up.  I suppose the 209 breech plug from the Omega would probably work, but I'm sitting on a bunch of musket caps and was hoping it was doable.  The #11's are a problem for me simply because of my fat fingers.  Even with a capping dispenser, everything is fine until I drop the spent cap into the action and have to flip the gun over and shake it.
