Catfish???
« on: April 19, 2014, 11:48:30 PM »
Anyone fishing cats and doing any good in the tri-cities, lower yak? I'm trying to put together a trip with the wife and kids and sure would appreciate a report from someone in the know before making the haul over there, thanks :)

I think it is time; the problem, for the Yakima, is that it is completely blown out. It will be a bit before it drops down and cleans up. A guy can still catch fish it just isn't ideal.

Yakima is completely blown out. I'm sure others are catching cats but you need a 36 oz cannoball to hold the bottom now.

Is there normally good fishing for the cats on the yak after the runoff?
I have never fished it but would like to try it this season. Thanks for the reports.

There is a guy on here that was slaying them last year.  I have only fished it about 3 times and have only caught 1 14-15lbr using some of those gulp minnow jigs, kind of a fluke haha.  I need to try it during the evening/night time sometime.

We'll see if my girlfriend gets down to Lyons Ferry Wednesday, she said she's going to since I've caught bait to use in the last week or two.  I'll tell her to take pics, I'm sure she will since I teased her with a bunch of crappie I caught this evening.  They should be able to get a few out in the main river as long as they don't get hung up on the rocks or break off the fish.

Are these areas fishable with my 12' Sorenson with 15hp or would I need to drag the bigger boat over there? 18' Fish Rite. The Sorenson is like a Livingston just built a little tougher. I would like to travel as light as possible but don't want to sacrifice safety.

Both the mouth of the Palouse and mouth of the Yakima would be fine with the 12 footer.  There's a launch back in slack water in Kennewick by Bateman's Island and there's the Lyon's Ferry launch right across the Snake River to the mouth of the Palouse.  I've seen people with 10 and 12 foot jon boats out there fishing by the Yakima.

So would that boat launch be at Wye park I see on google maps? It look pretty shallow and rocky around there, no big deal if your not a wingnut :chuckle: I only see very limited trailer parking, 4 spaces? Would you happen to know more about parking boat trailers there? Thanks.

No launching at the wye unless you can carry your boat. Concrete blocks on ramp. You can put in at Columbia point in Richland or chiawana park in pasco. Both are very close, plenty of parking and great ramps.

Main river looked good, not much runoff this year is what I heard. I fished from shore yesterday for 3 hours, got 3 fish lost about 6 on the main river. One probably went 15 pounds or so. Lost one right after that that felt bigger and was stripping more line or it was a small sturgeon. They said they're already back in the mouth of the Palouse fishing and doing well. My dad is bringing his boat over the weekend of the 17th so well be fishing there thurs to Monday.

Anyone else been out lately? I went out last night with my son and two good friends. We caught a handful. Bite was slow but we ended up with about a dozen in 5 hours.

Spent Saturday on the palouse, caught a few fish but nothing of any size at all. Had a great time and learned the water well for my first time out there. These PacNW cats sure are tough to figure out compared to South Carolina.

Hope everyone had a good weekend. Catfishing was slow this weekend but we kept a few for a fish fry. If anyone is wondering who the woman's leader is at the Lyons Ferry Catfish Derby, she is pictured below and I am a proud dad!

I've wanted to do your catfish trip the last couple years but it always seems I'm busy. That sure is a great looking pile of fish.
