Heading to Westport
« on: May 08, 2014, 09:21:18 AM »
Heading out tomorrow on the 7 hour trip from Spokane Valley to westport.  We have a bottomfish trip lined up on Saturday, crab rings for the boat basin, and I'd like to hit the jetty to try and catch something.  Any tips for fishing the jetty?

I've never fished the jetty but throwing plastic worms white or rootbeer has worked in the past for me on steelhead size gear

You will catch lots of crabs in the basin but no keepers for sure.
So I wouldent waste my time there.

The Jetty does produce! It will eat lots of gear though. We use big slip bobbers with anchovies or the like and just let it drift. You can also use leadhead jigs under the floats too. The floats are so large that the jigging wont pull the gear in to fast at all. Cast it out farther and jig it back in.

You also have to watch your traps in the basin, lots of thieves out their ether checking your pots for you or taking the whole thing.  :bash:

Crab in there two septembers ago and we ended up with 3 keepers in an evening.  Kind of a fun way to kill the time, hangout and drink beer.

I'll bring my steelhead stuff for the jetty.  How far out do you have to go to get into fish?

First just start on the North side and fish your way out. as it deepens way out on the south side you can get fish. But the South side is the surf side. More bottom fish on the deeper, calmer North side.
