Manson unit deer
« on: May 10, 2014, 03:59:05 AM »
Looking to do a boat in hunt on chelan this year. The north side of the lake, is that the manson unit? If so would it be a good bet for rifle season? Going to use my sled to get me to drop camp.
Thanks folks

Always wanted to do this myself. It is the manson unit. Ive heard prince cr i think it is can be good. I hear it is real steep too. Good new is your dragging down hill. Also lots of warnings on how that lake can whip up like a ocean and get dangerous. Not the deer herd it was when i hunted rifle.

Spin05,
I just want to try and beat the crowds and I thought take my sled and put about 20 miles between me and the boat launch and should have it all to myself.

Im in India right now and dont have my maps so it is real hard for me to tell what units I should try for. Slide ridge and Manson I believe should cover me either way.
I just have to get moving because the draw is coming up soon.
I will roll the dice and just see how it turns out. Thanks for your input.

Here we go again...might want to look up this same topic in previous posts for additional info. This is my "home" area...grew up there & worked a summer on the Lady of the Lake as well as a summer on the FS Initial Attack crew...I have only one thing to say about the hills on both sides of the lake 20 miles up...steep & dry...as for the lake expect to get pounded by waves in your sled...count on daily afternoon winds creating up to 6 ft whitecaps...luckily the wind blows downlake so you can ride the wind on the way home...if you seriously want to do this send me a PM and I'll point you in the right direction as long as you realize some safety things first...no cell service, gas only at either end, and being alone means nobody to help in case you need them...

Forgot one tiny detail...all those big bucks from the late season are up in the high country during the general season...lake level is 1,100 ft...top of the ridge is between 6,000 and 7,500 less than a mile from the lakeshore...after all its a fjord cut by a glacier thousands of years ago...and shore access can be limited...you can be 10 ft from shore and the lake will be 1,000 ft deep...total depth uplake (Lucern basin) is 1,475 ft...that's 375 below sea level...just fyi...you will have to use FS campground docks for access and steep trails to the high country where the big bucks are...not trying to discourage anyone, I just wanted to put out there why this hunt isn't done very often...but Stehekin...that's another story...good hunts up there.

Do you really want to climb 6000 vertical ft. to find hunting camps with motorcycles others with outfitters?  You would not be alone :yike: Your sled might not sink if the weather is calm but I wouldn't want to be tied up a Prince Creek during a wind storm. 4 ft waves are not fun here. The lake level is dropping fast and the dock isn't very long. This isn't the place to hunt if you draw a late tag.  :dunno:

Well I think I might just rethink this area for a boat in hunt and switch to the Roosevelt area for the boat in camp. Don't like the idea of getting my balls beat off. I do know about the country We are referring to, I usually hunt way above the lake and do fish this lake from time to time. It is steep forsure.
Thanks for talking me into a safer plan, and more than likely a better hunt.
I will be trying to put something together soon. My resources are pretty limited being all my maps are at home and I'm in Delhi. So I will roll the dice.
Thanks again fellas, your insight is very helpful.

Honestly not worth it trust me my best friend tried it, saw a lot of lil buck and we (hunted off the roads and walked from road) had a 50% success rate in the group.

Well I put in for the quality buck in the Manson and Slide Ridge units. I will be leaving the boat at home and going in from above.
Thanks Fella's for all the help.
Anybody else hunting these units let me know if you will be around and we can meet up for a cold one in the evening to see how everything went for the day.

We did it 25 or so years ago and we never ran into a soul up lake.  I have buddies who have tried it over the past couple of years and they all swore that they would never do it again.  You will be busting your butt just to push bucks into guys who came in from the top.  Unless you are out across the lake and glassing you will miss a lot of deer that you will bump into the next county as you climb and you will never know it, that is unless one cuts loose some rocks to shower you with.

Yep Shane, You are spot on.
I usually hunt up and over the top of Navarre. They are some nice deer in there, Coyotee ridge as well down a little lower is good at times also.

Yea I hear about it up that way! I just seem to find more deer mid way between the lake and Navarre  :dunno: haven't spent any real time yet near Navarre since I only get to hunt the weekends.

It's a great idea but you should be on the south side of the lake, bring a load of people and make a ton of noise while climbing.   :chuckle:
