Buddy drew this elk tag,any tips? We plan on hunting it hard and doing lots of scouting, never been in the unit though so a general layout of the land would be helpful

Alkali is the entire Yakima Training Center which is about 500 square miles.

First get a rec. card at the gym, then register your firearms with the base police. Do this well in advance of the hunt, you will need the rec. card to do any scouting anyway.  There is a list of other rules, learn them and you will be fine. A lot of scouting is advised, just keep in mind that training areas open for hunting today, could be closed to hunting tomorrow. You will have to hunt around the Army's training schedule. This can be frustrating. The Training Center has elk, some damn nice bulls to, but if your expecting huge numbers of dumb animals you will be disappointed. In my opinion, this is not a slam dunk hunt, but it can be a very satisfying hunt. Get in shape, I think I seen a flat spot once, while there. Your in Quincy, if you want to know what the country's like, look across the river into the Quilomene, that's a good representation. Hope this helps..Good Luck

Thanks everyone! How are the roads? Is it like the quilomene where there is a road every mile?

Roads are plenty....but unlike the Quil, their not open to the public. Have good tires, chains, not for snow but snot like mud. Bring all the things you may need, for anywhere else, you would go 30+ miles from help.....getting stuck is on you, the Army will not recover your vehicle.
Most roads are rocked, some not, so rain could really change things...My way of thinking is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.....

Again like said, new tires, as many ply as possible, and at least 2 good spares. My record for flat tires out there in a day is 4.

A high quality spotting scope is a must on the YTC.

AT LEAST 2 spare tires and quality optics.

WIDE OPEN country.   In my experience, elk on the YTC can be few and far between, but occasionally folks do get one.

Learn the rules before you go.  E.g.   you can sign up for 3 training areas, so have a plan in place before you get there.

Best of luck to you.
