A couple things about Whitcomb I'll just throw out there.  Yes, it is kind of an island and most of is is fairly open with some farm ground  that the deer like.  One area is off limits while much of the brushy parts are very thick.  The good news is that it's an early hunt and if you can hold out and not take advantage of legally killing a spike or forky, you have the rest of the general season to hunt for a real buck.

I recommend you looking hard at the regs and all the hunting dates that go on in there.  Before you are allowed to chase bucks around, there will be a week of 10 archery guys in there after a doe.  I don't think that fish and game really care about the deer there, I think its a way to push deer off of the island so that there are less road kills on HWY 14.

A youth archery hunter will probably need to be in a stand or to try and pattern them.  I have poor results patterning any single mule buck especially after any amount of pressure.  I don't remember if there is corn planted on there this year or if it's all alfalfa.  My gut says you better expect corn which means they won't be leaving it.

It could be a great hunt....I don't mean to discourage.  But....I will say I'm surprised how many people put in for it as well as how many spikes or forked horns people settle for....

I did see one last night that I couldn't get a picture of but he had some real potential.
