Westport crabbing
« on: July 01, 2014, 12:18:30 AM »
So just picked up 2 crab traps. Never done this before but myself, the wife and the kids are going to try some crabbing at westport tomorrow. Ive been doing some reading online and think we are going to use chicken and drop off float 20. But just wanted to make a post and ask if anyone could lend some knowledge or advise. Even maybr a link to something would be great. Thanks and ill post how we did after we get done!

Check out Youtube. There are a few vids of guys (WA Fish Quest)dropping traps in the marina from the piers and then climbed out on the jetty to fish. They only have to be 6"s on the coast and you don't need a special crab licence. Most of the fish were black bass on the jetty but they were nice size. Its not a good place for kids as the rocks are huge and slick.I have been out there and got some nice fish but be prepared and wear gloves and don't go out beyond the warning siqns.

Crabbing is fun their, lots of small crab. We had a red rock that was just short, and one dungeness that was just short. Lots of crabs to sort, we had fun! Chicken and rockfish carcasses is what we used for bait.

I wouldn't count on a lot of keepers but you'll have a good time regardless. If your kids get discouraged send me a PM I will be crabbing on the outside I'm sure we'll have plenty to share, maybe we can stick a couple keepers in your pots when they aren't looking.
