Back to the Wenas
« on: June 28, 2014, 07:35:51 PM »
Well back to the Wenas area we go. For the last 2 years we have been hunting 368 Cowiche due to the Maloy rd closure. Our hunting partner drew a cow tag for 342 so here we go again. I grew up hunting the Wenas with my family and it was kind of nice hunting a new area but lots of memories in the Wenas. Hopefully we can find him a cow to shoot, I know there are a lot of elk in there but it seems that on even years we don't see as many animals atleast from what we can tell for the last 14 years.

I like to look at the valley when everything is green.  Very pretty in the morning.  Usually view it from Manastash ridge.

It's very nice over there but prefer higher elevation hunts like where we hunted in the Cowiche. Oh well my dad is very happy to be going back there and that is what matters the most I guess. Hopefully I can re pay a pack out for our friend since he has helped me 2 times pack out elk

Grew up in the unit, and hunted it alot when I was younger, love the area! Killed my 1st elk in there at 16, a big cow.

Hi we have hunted here,342,for about 11 yrs..3 bull spikes and 6 cow's.Last year was the worst only saw 8 cows',and we hunt up and down the draws.back to the road, which is about 4 to 5 miles...if it's warm, stay in deep shade, and steep.they travel around and will most likely come through an area that,as cool as they can find...4500 ft level.the cows will hope over to 410 side late in the evening.cool is good, cold is where I go.not many people last yr when the weekenders left. green 360 prairie with a green basket on back . my shots have been 25 ft to 400 yds.

Yup lots of good areas in there. My dad started hunting it in 1972. I started hunting it in 1986 and it has definetely changed a lot in there.

I haven't been out that way for awhile. How are the roads and the camping?
