Weyco St. Helens Tree Farm Access
« on: August 01, 2014, 12:43:32 PM »
I have a key but the way I understand it the Winston and Margaret are shut down for fire danger even to key holders. Am I hearing that correctly?

They are open to permit holders for nonmoterized access. That could change one way or the other depending on the weather between now and archery season.

I just listened to the hotline and it didn't say anything about being closed. It said for permit holders, it will be open 8/1 for limited motorized access  :dunno:

Recreational Access Hotline Script

Yes, "portions" are open for drive in. However, if you look at the hotline script online, it includes a map showing that most of the tree farm, including all of it that is in the Margaret and Winston units, is walk or bike in only at this time

tried to include a link, but doesn't look like it worked

I see it now. Looks like a portion of the Winston is still open in the gray area

True enough, I missed that.
As usual, as hunting season approaches, I am hoping for rain. Would suck if they don't keep it open at least for walking in, but I knew that was the chance we were taking when we bought the permit.

I'm sure I'm missing something but how about the area of DNR land in the Camp 9 area?  Are all the locked gates off the 550 road permit only or what?  I don't have a clue what areas they are talking about when it comes to that permit.

The DNR land will still be open. Weyerhaeuser can't keep you off that. Problem is you won't be the only hunter there, if everything else is shut down.

I knew that the DNR land would still be open but since there are many Weyco gates that are immediately adjacent to it, will they require a permit or just be like they have been in the past?

You will need to look at the Weyco access permit map for that info.

I looked up the access maps online and, so far, I can't tell with sufficient detail about the areas I was talking about.  I probably just need to keep plugging away till I find the right one.  In any event, the way this weather has been and is forecast for the next little while, I suspect they will close everything anyway because of the fire danger if we don't get some pretty good rain around the end of the month.
