CVA Northwest Fail to Fire

I've seen a couple posts on another forum about this, sometimes when they are shooting, they'll get a couple fail to fires where the first strike hits and doesn't do anything, and then the next strike goes boom.

This is something I wanted to test out today with my new NorthWest Optima.

The RWS musket caps are harder to expand due to that top hat design and I figure what is going on after a few shots when the possible fail to fire on first strike happens, is due to the fouling on the musket nipple that has built up, it doesn't allow for the musket cap to fully seat. Just like what happens with a #11 percussion nipple when it starts to wear and bulge, we can not get the caps to seat and the first hammer strike hits it, seats it and then strike #2 makes it go bang.

Today I used my simple swabbing solution and moistened a q tip in it and cleaned the musket nipple shaft after every shot. After 8 shots, I hung it up and called it quits. I had zero misfires/hang fires.

It was easy to see how quickly that musket cap set up fouls and how it can cause seating trouble after 4-5 shots on the range. Its a very quick process to take care of since you normally have the breech plug out after each shot while swabbing.

Interesting. I have experienced the same problem. I do swab between the shots but never take the breach plug out at the range. I do use a nipple pick to keep things opened up and that has made a big difference. I will add the Q-tip cleaning  to the nipple as well and see how it goes. Also. The reason I don't remove the BP when cleaning between shots is I don't like anti-seize on the threads as everything sticks to it. Sabotloader turned me on to using Teflon thread tape. No mess. Easier to clean at the end of the day.

i dont use anti seize or tape on the QRBP, just not needed.

When I swab, I do it from the breech plug side to push all the fouling out the muzzle and away from the BP threads.

Just bought the NW wolf, so do you think the anti seize that Cva recommends is not needed ? IDK this is my first inline, really appreciate the tips.

i've been shooting the QRBP cva's since 2010 and using tape or grease has never been needed for me. With the t7 or pyrodex powder, i always swab between shots when using it, so removing the plug after every shot is the way i do it. The qrbp also has that special sleeve where it seals it up and doesnt allow it to get past the theads.

Interesting. No goop on the threads whatsoever. I guess if you remove after every shot it wouldn't freeze up anyway. That special sleeve has a little ding in it on mine, not sure how it got there, so I'm picking up quite a bit of blowback up the threads a little.
