GMU 407 Crescent lake
« on: September 02, 2014, 07:18:14 AM »
I'm new to the form and hunting...I'm here to learn and get as much experience this season as possible.  I'd love some feed back on the areas I've been scouting etc?  brutal honesty appreciated :)

I live in Maltby which is just south of the Snohomish river.  For the past 3 years I've seen some impressive blacktail deer in the area, last November a MONSTER buck in the rut came searching for 2 local doe in my back yard and I was bit by the hunting bug!  I picked up a bow a few months later, started practicing and now its my 1st season.....

Just across the Snohomish river from where I live, in GMU 407 is the Crescent Lake public land mostly known for bird hunting yet I'm confident its holding blacktail deer.  No modern rifle hunting is allowed at Crescent lake so I feel most overlook this public land deer hunting opportunity?  Seems like prime deer habitat; on the river, next to corn fields bordered by 250 acres of dense old forest and a slew.
I've scouted the area, IMO the deer come feed on the corn at night/early morning hours, then return to the shaded cool woods to bed down during the hot early season weather of lately.  I have my eye on a few trees that would be ideal for a ghetto stand of some sort and was considering setting up a game camera and throwing out some cabela apple/salt blocks.  Is that a bad idea on public land and/or in general due to baiting legality?

I'd love some input on this area & my thoughts?  Best practice advise etc?

I have very realistic expectations for this season, success comes in different forms, just getting close to some deer would be great!

I do believe that Crescent lake is actually in 460.  I'd double check the GMU description for 407.
