Snohomish River Warning

I took my 11 year old son out today to see if we could find a Coho that wanted to come home with us.In our day on the water we had someone cast their plunking rig into our boat as we went past!    I did nothing different than I have done in the past and stayed as far away from them as the situation allowed but apparently that wasnt good enough for this person. I just want to let people know to be on the lookout for this kind of thing. It could have turned out extremely bad if it had hit one of us! I have cross posted this to a few facebook pages just to get the word out.

People don't reallize or think about the fact that what they are doing when they do things like this is that it is potentially deadly! Add to that the fact that more and more people are carrying these day and you could end up with an extremely bad situation for all parties involved! Think before you act.

To the person fishing on Short School Rd on the Snohomish: your lucky you didn't hit me or my 11 yr old son who was standing next to me in the boat when you slung your plunking rig with a 2 ounce pyramid weight at us as we went by! I'm sorry that you have to share the river with boaters and you probly don't understand that I throw less wake when I stay up on plane. I hugged the far side of the river as best as I could with all of the snags in that area.

BTW.....I have your rig if you would like it back but your not gonna catch anything using a size egg hook for salmon.

Seen it a million times if you go to fast expect it.some fisherman don't under stand the wake and if I where u I would slow down on that area or duck.just to avoid that or shots fired people are crazy. Good luck to u on your coho quest.

Not on a corner. We were just going through the bottleneck at the top of the hole where the clay bank sticks out and is shallow and the other side is full of snags. We stay as tight to the snags as we can.

They may have mistaken my son for an adult...he is 5' 6" and 160#'s.

Seen it a million times if you go to fast expect it.some fisherman don't under stand the wake and if I where u I would slow down on that area or duck.just to avoid that or shots fired people are crazy. Good luck to u on your coho quest.

Are you freaking kidding me!  Go fast and expect it???  You sound almost as ignorant as the offender in the situation.  No one should "expect" to be potentially assaulted when out enjoying what is all of ours to SHARE!  Do you expect a swift kick to the jewels if you changed lanes without a blinker just because another person doesn't like the way you did it?  There are rules and regulations to protect us for a reason and people chosen to enforce them.  Why should it be acceptable for a random person to do self policing?  That's just asking for trouble with the lashback.

Been fishing and boating with mallard all my life and he is a very respectful boater when it comes to bankies.  Leaves plenty of room wether going by or on anchor. 

And slow down through there?  Naw....... The plunkers still treat u the same, just for longer periods of time because you are spending more time in front of them. 

This kind of stuff boils my blood.  It is a navigable waterway, get over it.  Go somewhere else if you are not willing to share "your" river, mr self righteous plunker.  Karma will catch up with you and your kind sooner or later and I hope I am there to witness it.

Keep the net handy next time you go through there...if they pitch their gear at ya just put the net on top of it and stand on the net...watch the rod get yanked out of their hands! This used to happen to us at Drano from the bankies pitching their plugs at us...good way to collect some gear and rods!

Lol, couldn't it have been an accident his gear hit your boat? Why would someone want to loose their plunking  gear that way? Even an experienced plunker can over shoot their cast sometimes

I wasn't there this time, but why else would someone chuck their gear out in a narrow stretch of river as a boat is going by?  I personally wait for boats to pass when I am on the bank. 

 Unless the person were deaf and blind then it was a purposeful and mulitious act.

I'm guessing rookie idiot plunker then dunno but if it was purposeful I'm guessing he was venting his frustration out because 80% of river boaters do tend to run full throttle in front of the bankies for jolly reasons maybe . I've had guys cut me off and laugh.

I think you misread what Jason meant.

I think he said expect it because people on the bank are jerks sometimes. I can tell you there's been a bunch of times on blue creek i've wanted to fling a cannon ball at a guide drifting the creek over the top of 15 guys fishing the bank. But i didn't

I guess I must have missread what you were trying to say.  Just like this statement.  Wtf does having your pistol on you have to do with anything?  Are you trying to make a point to assume that anyone could be packing?  If so, very poorly executed.  You could have just said that. 

I am not an idiot, I do assume that everyone I come in contact with is armed.  It would be foolish not to.  I guess you just had a poor choice of words when you said to "expect" it.  I have heard the term expect the unexpected plenty of times, but nobody should expect to have this happen to them.  And I can gaurentee that we are out on the the snoho just as often if not more than yourself and are fully aware of the attitudes of some plunkers towards boats at Thomas Eddy and Douglas.  We have had and seen plenty of instances between plunkers and boats over the years there, it just seems to be getting worse the last few years.

Since you have kids of your own, put yourself in the same situation.  I can only asseme that you would be infuriated too?  My 11 year old nephew was in that boat.  That easily could've been lights out for good if it hit either of them the right way. 

Sorry if this seems like I am having a heated debate with you, I do not hold ill will towards you.  Your first response just kinda made it seem like it was an everyday thing to happen and for people to expect to look out for this stuff.  Been through there 1,000 times,  never once have I felt the need to look out for flying pyramid sinkers directed at me.  I guess times are changing for the worse.

No harm no foul.  Trying to get across what you are trying to say when it is not in person can be difficult at best.  This is why I have a love hate relationship with forums.  Great for sharing info and meeting great new people but hard to express what you are trying to say without being misconstrued sometimes.  Lol

As stated by Superfull...there is no way that this was an accident. You can hear a sled a half mile away and in that stretch see them coming for almost a quarter mile. Pretty hard to miss a polished aluminum boat on a sunny day coming up or down river.....unless of course they were blind and def but I highly doubt that that was the case 

The battle between bankies and boaters is futile fight...both sides will always see it differently. Even in boats we have to deal with other inconsiderate people. We had a guy pull up and anchor exactly where we were casting last year! We have people come over and crowd us when we are catching fish....just like some bankies....these are just inconsiderate and/or ignorant people.....every group has their own, but the violence is absolutely unacceptable and cannot be tollerated!

I would have no problem having words with anyone who tries this stunt. The problem lies in the fact that I am not willing to risk putting my son in a potentially dangerous situation. My son was with Superfull and a couple friends and I when a drunk pulled his gun and started waiving it around in our direction. We were able to de-escalate the situation but that could have ended very badly. Two of us were locked and loaded and on high alert and my son had been moved as far from the potential threat before the gun was pulled due to comments made by the drunk earlier in the encounter.. I will protect my family using every means necesary and carry every day in order to do so if needed.

I grew up fishing this river system with my grandpa and have seen it go from great fishing and everyone getting along and making room so we could squeeze in one more guy to this situation. It really saddens me to think that I will have to worry more about my son being assaulted on the river bank than him drowning.

No fish caught on this trip. Very few jumping. We were launched before daylight and fished from Thomas Eddy to Ebbey slough. My son had 2 follow right to the boat while we were in Ebbey slough @ low slack tide. A good rain and we will be have plenty of fish to keep us busy.

Wow! I fish the system in my sled A LOT for coho, steelhead, kings, and even the crazy pink season and have never encountered anything like that. I try to be courteous and give as much room to the bank guys as possible. I also stay on step most of the time as it causes less of a wake and you obviously pass through their zone faster. I often times have my little girl with me and she is usually just sitting on the floor and therefore can't be seen by people. If you choose to launch a sinker into somebodies boat you never know who or what you may hit and badly injure or kill. Pull that stuff on me and hit her you had better be ready to deal with somebody who could potentially get a lot crazier than you! Food for thought people! It is big river and there should be room for everybody.
