22-250 ammo for coyotes

I just got a 22-250, im looking for a bullet suggestion for coyotes. Looking for something that won't destroy a pelt, want to get into tanning or give it a try. Thanks guys!

Grew up in N.D. clobbering many fox & coyotes with reloads and this bullet.  We did this for the fur/pelt money. They don't get the marketing and fanfare they deserve.  They are very accurate and deadly.  Only occasional blowout on coyotes say at 200 yards.

 Winchester ammo, white box I think 50 to a box 45 grain. work great, cheap!! some folks will say VMax, in my 22-250(it must be weird) these thing blew BIG holes both sides, pieces of guts flying very ugly.

When hunting with my BinL (he doesn't reload) White Box Winchesters have worked fine for him.  I have great luck with 52gr Speer FB HP's in my 22-250 and 5.6x50R Magnum.  One of my favorite pelt hunting bullets is the 40gr NBT at about 3950 fps out of my 22-204.

I shoot UMC remington 50 grain and it does great w/o a ton of damage.  It scrambled the insides pretty good but the wholes were pretty small.

What kind of gun is it or do you by chance know the twist rate of the barrel?

Just about all factory 22-250's come with pretty slow twist rates so that'll somewhat limit you on what bullet your gun will shoot.  It'll probably shoot it's best with 50 grainers and lighter, ammo.  I don't really shoot much factory ammo but I have shot some of Hornady's Superformance Ammo in my 223ai when I first got it back from the gunsmith and that stuff shot a .112 in the first few rounds down the pipe.  Not bad for standard factory 223 ammo in a 223 ack imp chamber.

The above is what I've always run in my 22-250. It works great but has done some damage on a few. Hard to say what your gun is going to like.

Have used Nosler 55 bt's with 35.5gr. win.748 in my Ruger 22-250 for years.  Deadly accurate and excellent on pelts.  (as long as you stay out of the tummy area.)

Being a 10tw is a good thing, it'll give you much more flexibility in your bullet choices.

OK so I should be able to run 50/55grains no problem then?

I was having some runners with 50 gens 55 grn nosler balistic tip, hornady vmax or hornady soft point all have shot very well with little hide damage

I think I would try the 60 grain Nosler Partitions. Or, Barnes TSX. But with those you'll have to stay with 53 grain or less, I believe. The heavier TSX billets and their plastic tipped bullets all require a faster than 1 in 10 twist.

Another option, which is one I'm going to try in my 223 WSSM for deer and antelope in Wyoming, is the Sierra 65 grain Gameking.

Nothing says you can't load the ammo down.  Back when I loaded .222 and .22-250 for coyotes (and hides) I kept the muzzle velocity to 2400 fps.

One person used to load his .222 down to 1500 fps with the 45 grain Sierra spire point.

I'm getting 3600+. It doesn't really matter how fast as long as your shot is well placed. Only hide damaged I've ever really caused was cause a poor *censored* that hit bone or shot down the side when lookin at me

One more bit of info as the memory banks fired up.  I used to shoot coyotes up in Lowell and used a .22 Hornet as my rifle.  The loads were the 45 grain Sierra spitzer at 2500-2600 fps.  The bullets basically "pencil poked" the coyotes and finding the hits (or exits) was close to impossible.   Guess how many years ago it was legal to shoot in Lowell with a centerfire rifle.  I hesitate to say "high powered rifle" as I was using a Hornet.

My 22-250 is 1/10 twist as well,  55gr. bullets is not a problem, and they'll take'em down a long ways out there.

If you reload, go with FMJ bullets to save pelts. If you dont reload, use the facortly ammo that shoots the most accurately from your gun.  With the HP or varmint bullets, i suggest you make your shots, long shots and let that bullet slow down a little. I stopped using 22-250 years ago for coyotes because factory ammo blew gaping holes in them. Its not a good caliber for saving fur.

Not saying they would be best for your particular rifle but I reload and use Sierra 55 grain SBT. As long as you are farther than 100 yards no exit hole less than that and I get a small exit

Do be carefull with fmjs they can pass right through and the dog will run for miles before dying if they die at all
