first coyote hunt summary

So this is my report after my first attempt at calling/hunting coyotes.
So I went out to the Hope land area out in the Belfair Dewato area  bunch of semi fresh clear cuts growth is 3-5 feet tall. Set up shop on a small hill over looking the old growth  with the road to my right and back side  roughly 200-300 yards away that is semi well used.
I figured the yotes wouldn't be bothered by road noise. However there was target shooting going on in the distance  like faintly heard the shots. I had the Primos Hot Dog caller and was using the distressed fawn call along with wounded pup and some jackrabbit thrown in. Sat for roughly an hour to hour and a half with random calling  saw or heard no yotes. But a couple of Ravens started cawing in the old growth after a bit of calling.

So with any advise on what to try next I would live your input

Like me today tried to call one in no takers , its rough on this wet side . Seems coyotes are less vocal here and real limited sight distance makes it worse . Keep trying . On days like this with a change of weather pattern its hard . One can't be successful on the couch keep at it .

In my experience, if there's no action in the first 15-20 minutes, it's time to make a move. Anything that's within earshot will make its move (if it's gonna) in that span. You end up covering more ground by moving, and get in front of other dogs that may be more receptive.

I agree with the 15 to 20 minute idea. If they are going to do it, they will by then. Watch your wind, in that thick stuff they can get below you and you will never know it. Most of all have fun.

It was hard to see but there was a lot of distance from where I was to the end of the cut. When you say move on would I try moving deeper into this spot or pick up and try a different clear cut  and maybe come back later on?

If I hear shooting or traffic I usually don't waste my time and find a better spot. As far as a move goes, for me it depends on the wind and how big of an area it is. Ty to move far enough to get to new area where your caller sound hadn't reached.

It is going to depend on where you are and how far you are from the shots. Distant shots bother me more than the coyotes where I hunt, but the shots often start at daylight 6 or 7 days a week and the dogs get used to them.

In the area I believe that gun shots are a very common thing  alot of clear cuts and roadside target shooting

Went out hunting today in two different spots  the first spot we sat down and within 5 minutes we had a hawk flying over us but didn't see or hear any coyotes.

The second spot we could hear them barking and howling off in the woods. We tried calling g them and they all went silent  the like 10 minutes later one started barking from the woods. So we tried barking back at it but no response. It would bark at random. What are we doing wrong? Is this normal

My guess is they heard or saw you set up. Maybe a warning bark. If you hunt that area again use totally different sounds and set up in a different location.

I do not worry to much about gun fire
A perfect example , we were calling a ranch the other day working a long draw all sage brush from 8 am till about 2 pm saw 7 called 6 and killed 5  the draw was about 3 miles in length.
On your side where there are a lot of woods you have to remember the sound does not penetrate the woods like it does our sage brush country.
Calling on your side takes a lot of patience, And requires a lot of field time to learn what is going to work for you , just keep at it , Do not get frustrated and quit.
In time it will all come together for you And remember its just a lot tougher to call in coyotes on your side of the hill . 
Get on google and search a coyote warning bark . That will tell you if your BUSTED or not.The hawk flying above tells me you were doing a lot right. 
Barks are usually NOT a good thing BUT that coyote may have been barking at something else as well . 
Tips from east side callers  like me( No offence to east side guys) Do not always apply to your side of the mountains , Its a diffrent game over on your side due to population, human and coyote , The ground, And hunting pressure .

I'm mother getting frustrated. I'm just trying to get as much information from each hunt to learn more so that the next hunt is completely new. New tips new set up. I've wanted to get across to the east side but there is just so much area I have not the slightest area where to start

I do not normally reply to these type of threads, but since Jerry did ( a very good caller/coyotekiller). I think one big thing to get over on this side is the "sighting", when calling lots of times you get a 'glimpse' a ways out and you can kinda anticipate arrival routes, on this side, that is unusual. Here you more have to guess arrival/travel routes, and hope you see em. Here you may, NO WILL, be shooting at ,seeing parts of coyotes. You are going to call alot of coyotes you never see. When calling a new area here I like to set up in a new area, where I can see alot, not a spot that I can kill from. call and hope I see some movement, that I can set up on in the future.  Lots of my areas are short shots, 50 -100 yards. You still need volume cause the sound stops and they can respond from a long ways. WHEN YOU GET A SHOT TAKE IT AND KILL IT. I like to call farms and edge areas, I call small spots I find, 1 acre even, and edge areas, where you cant hunt but you can call em from.
Make friends with farmers, help build fence, show manners, if they let you hunt, keep an eye on their place.

I need to focus on this. Cause when I've gone out I've found a spot that would look good to me for a clean shot. I also need to try getting over the hill and trying my luck over there.
