Year 10 of the quest for a wall hanger pure bred Rosie from the Olympic Peninsula.  I had a monster at 20 yards for well over a minute with no good shot last year ( he went right and came in head-on instead of left and broadside like he was supposed to). :bash:  Then I had him at 35yds ten minutes later with a 6 inch tree in front of his vitals for 5 minutes,  where he waited out the daylight clock on me.  :bash:   :bash:  :bash:  Maybe this year will be it.  I passed on 5 other legal bulls last season, 3 of which were within 45 yards.  Three of the five where 5x's.  I have let some really big 5x's go on this endeavor over the years, it's been grueling and mentally challenging to say the least ( one of those big ones was at 15 yds, the biggest was at 20) .  All has been done with over the counter tags.  People think I'm nuts or full of crap.  The voices in my head say I can't argue against that, at least not the first point :o

If and when I complete this quest, then it's east for a wall hanger Rocky.

I'm on the same quest...

a 6 in tree? that would cover up a very small amount of vital... I am assuming it had tons of branches? if not then dang man.. a 6 in tree would not stop me from shooting at a 3 ft wide target area.

Elk vitals are not three feet wide.  I have had a bull stop at 7 yards with a 12 inch fir in front of his shoulder.  I could have shot but didn't want to skip the limbs.  If I was quicker than I could have stuck him a second before he stopped.  But I do agree 6inches and I pick the side of the tree closest to the major vitals.

Never ceases to amaze me how people get on here to say I would shot or why didn't you shoot when another person passes a shot they weren't comfortable with.  If everyone practiced the idea of limiting their shots to ones they know they can make less game would be wounded.

For the record I'm not suggesting that you don't have the skill to make the shot the op was talking about but I don't see how you can question someone's judgment not to shoot.

The one over the vitals is the one that stopped me from making a shot.  There were actually 4 or 5 trees in a row with 8 to12 inch windows between them that the bull set up behind.  I the waning light, it was not a shot I was willing to force.    I thought I would have another opportunity on the bull in the coming days, but he pulled stakes and vaporized.
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.
