Out of state tag service
« on: February 18, 2015, 08:44:37 AM »
Does anyone know of a tag service similar to Cabelas Tags?  I'm going to put in for antelope in Montana this year and would like to go about it that way.  I was going to use Cabelas Tags, but after my experience at Cabelas this weekend, I won't be doing business with them anymore.

If all you're doing is applying for antelope in Montana, I wouldn't pay a tag service to do that.  It's simple enough to do.
Maybe there's something I'm not thinking about.
I think "Huntin Fool" does it though if you want to pay someone to do it.

Just do it yourself. I apply for 4-5 states a year and do it all on my own.

Applying for it is easy enough. The benefit I was hoping for was some aid in finding a unit with a reasonable chance of success and public land I can get on.  I just got the Onyx map chip for Montana and have it in my computer, so finding the public land is easy now. I just need to find which places offer a decent shot at a speed goat.

This

Or maybe there's some good info in the Eastman's MRS section? Never seen it before so I can't say how good it is.

For one application, DIY.

If you want to do more I recommend Hunter Application Services.

I say DIY it's not that hard, I kinda enjoy doing the research part. The only application service I didn't see mentioned is Epic Outdoors, I don't know anything about their service other than that it is Jason Carter and some of the former Huntin Fool staff.

DIY especially if you are just going for Montana. I have been a Huntin Fool member but its not necessary for MT.

700 tag is the easiest to draw but not the best genetics.  If you want to just go shoot a respectable goat than you will have a fun hunt.  Head towards Broadus or anywhere in the south east corner really and you will find lots of country to hunt and enough goats to keep you entertained.  If you want a bit more trophy quality look at the 4,5, and 600 tags.

Personally I would plan a trip to Wyoming.  WAY more goats, you can buy a pile of doe tags for cheap, and even the easiest to draw tags hold some trophy potential.  That and I can't stand to give money to Montana!  They have become one of the worst money grubbing states there is!

The only reason to do Cabela's is if you want them to "float" the tag fee. States like Montana and New Mexico require upfront tag fees which could be $500-$3000.

If you are a member of "Huntin Fool" they will give you one free state a year, that they will apply for you.

DIY is the way to go!

Thanks for the input, everyone. My brother moved to Billings a little while ago, so I think I'm going to research some spots and put in for the 700 tag.

I subscribe to Huntinfool', but put in for out of state apps by myself. They supply the information needed to get started and narrow down units, but it saves alot of money to call the states individually and have them walk you through the online apps.

MFWP has online harvest stats to see where they are getting em. They also list the regions biologists. They seem to be coming back in the unit I put in for.
I have Man Chit to do
