what week for Oregon archery elk?
« on: April 22, 2015, 03:56:22 PM »
Sorry for all the questions (deer entiat question) but here is another one. My old man and I will more than likely be hunting NE Oregon for elk. We are trying to decide if we want to go the 12-20 or 19-27. New moon is on the 12th I believe and full moon on the 27th so its a bit of a double edged sword. Do we wait for the last week in hopes of cooler weather and maybe more rut activity or do we go for the week before after the new moon and possibly less cowed up bulls?

Would love to go both weeks but it really depends on what we draw and also would prefer to only use 5 days of vacation.

I dont play the rut hype or moon phase games. With that said on the opener last year I missed a 6x6 on the Aug opener .  Im still pissed about my drop away rest not dropping away twice at 19 yards..

Im hunting every fri-mon until I get one..  Elk are going to be around, just gotta find them. Which unit are you hunting?
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

It doesn't matter what you think...

Chesnimus. My odds are low of drawing an any elk tag but my dad is a resident and has a few points so hoping he draws and then I will just be his caller and packer

Isn't east side elk in Oregon for archery over the counter?  I've been thinking about doing that hunt for years.

Some units are but a few aren't. This one has a decent amount of tags and odds. I am hoping to draw any elk but if I don't, would like to draw at least cow/spike so I could still hunt with my dad. Nice thing is if you don't draw first choice but draw second choice is you don't burn your points.

I hunted that general area last year and Id say the 12-20 will be good dates. A lot of the bulls seemed to clam up that last week and a half. plus most guys hit it hard opening weekend and then the final week.
