reg vs late deer
« on: July 15, 2015, 11:26:27 AM »
I'm planning several trips this season for elk and deer. Due to work schedule restrictions, I've having issues trying to secure good deer rifle dates. We'll be able to do late archery elk easily and rifle elk, of which it overlaps with late season deer rifle.

In GENERAL, what's better success between regular and late season deer? I wonder since it's been so warm this year late season might be good but I've never done late hunts.

Also we're doing west side elk, so I don't mind  west deer but I'lll be trying for east side mulies and whites if I can.

You drew Multi Season Elk?

Late vs Early is all about what your style is  :twocents:

I have always had better luck late season but like Jonathan said, it really depends on your style as well as your location. Some people have great spots for early season that don't produce late but mine are opposite and the deer don't show up until later.

Not to infer too much from your posting mendozer but it sounds like you're pretty new to hunting.  I would encourage you to hunt somewhere that you're able to spend the most time hunting.  Sounds like that means western.  Hunt early deer, hunt elk and then you will still be able to hunt late deer.  That time and knowledge in the woods closer to home would be more valuable in the long run than a mad dash for a weekend trip to the east side  :twocents:

In eastern Washington, there is a late buck season for whitetails in GMU units 117, 121 and 124.  The late buck season runs from November 7th - 19th this year in those units.  If you'll do a little research you'll find that there are hunting opportunities on State land, DNR land and paper company land in those units.  Inland Empire Paper has some large landholdings and they allow access if you buy a pass.  I think the pass might be $30.00.   The I.E.P. pass used to be available for purchase at White's Boots on Ferry Rd. (near the Spokane County Fairgrounds) if you are interested in hunting on their land.

As for your question about early vs. late - the best time to go hunting is anytime that you can get out and do it...

Best of luck, Mendozer!
