Sherman Bears

Looking to head up to Sherman for a little bear hunting next weekend.  Been reviewing the fire maps and closures and was wondering if its still worth going up there??  Some of my usual spots are closed unfortunetely but still want to get out of the house for a long weekend and stretch the legs.  Are their any berries still up high worth hunting for bears or are they all down along the creeks eating?

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not positive on current closures but the last I heard the entire (effectively) unit of 101 is closed to public access.

There are lots of bears this year way more than I have ever seen in the past. Lots of choke cherries but lots of new gates to boot and closed to public access signs all over.

Boulder is still pretty much closed from 21 East to 395 and from 20 north to the border.

I saw no berries or sign on Sherman pass south of the road on August 9th.  I haven't been back yet

Thanks guys.  I was looking at the new closure map and they did open up a little bit of land but my normal areas are still closed.  Hoping we get a little rain up there quickly but I can't imagine they will open it up anytime soon.  Any berries to speak of south of Sherman Pass on top via the trailhead?

not when I was there. The few I found where crunchy dry. Some mountain ash here and there but no berries like normally I find.  Saw some hawthorn berries down low by the creek but nothing else to speak of.  I did find bear sign down low by Sherman creek but dry as a popcorn fart up high where I normally hunt

The east and SE side of Sherman was all open when I went over it 2 weeks ago. Boulder looks like hell. Everything west of Curlew was open as far as I know and was never closed down. I live there and would know. It's drier than a popcorn fart, so driving the logging roads would be your best bet. Best of luck....

Berries still in the 2500-3000 foot range. Most bears and bear sign i saw was in the 2,000 ft range and low flats. I would walk the logging roads and use my bionoculars alot. My area was no where near as dry as I thought it would be. Just hang on lower elevation, find a good water source and hunt near that. Keep wind in your favor, you shold be in buisness. Bear were down near the water where I hunt, alot of grasses in the poo right now. I think fresh green grasses are a huge part of there diet this fall.

thanks for the update.  Thursday can't get here fast enough.  I'll be up there through the weekend to see if we can't knock one down.

Looks like rain for a day up there to help with the fires, then clearing later in the week.

I'm at 2200' and we don't have any berries. The chokecherries are all dried up around here, Curlew area. Best bet is like tgomez says, low and near water. Also, a predator call works wonders too, if you know how to use one. Good luck.
