Slow Deer Hunting
« on: October 18, 2015, 08:02:23 PM »
I have to say this is the worst opening weekend i have had in a lot of years i hunt just south of spokane on private land i am use to seeing 4 to 5 shooter bucks per day didn't see a shooter buck till late today couldn't get to him so let him go hopefully will find him monday morning talked to the farmer who owns the property said the numbers on deer and coyotes were down said he couldn't remember being this bad so people with late season palouse tags just a heads up mostly whitetails in my area but the mule deer are in the area also hope to have better luck thru the week.

I hunt private land just south of Spokane as well and same story.  I couldn't find any deer on land that usually has several shooters.  Hopefully better tomorrow...

I agree.  Slow on the west side too. Rut looks about to start so this coming weekend should pick up.

Same story in Whitman County.  Hunted the family wheat farm, saw 6 bucks and only 1 was legal (3-point) whitetail.  All racks were small, narrow, and spindly.  Very few shots opening weekend and only 1 taken by our crew, a very small 3X4 Muley. :P

Do you think the Blue Tongue outbreak had anything to do with it?  or the dry conditions? or both?

I've heard conjecture about it in Whitman County where we hunted but saw no dead deer and no evidence of it in live deer.  As is typically the case, about 30% of the deer we encountered were whitetails.  The one thing I did notice was a smaller crop of fawns that expected but overall deer numbers were about what I expected.
