My first elk hunt!
« on: November 04, 2015, 07:49:39 AM »
Well I finally got to go on my first elk hunt!! A friend of my dads let me come up to elk camp in little naches. I went up for a couple days and slept in the truck. not only was it my first elk hunt but my first time walking through the woods! It was everything I expected and more. I absolutely loved it! it was super rainy and if you walked anywhere in the woods you came out soaked!! the people I were hunting with were awesome and taught me a lot about elk hunting habitat food sources everything there is to know and showed me a lot of country and some of there hot spots too!! We found fresh bear tracks and bear scat that was still warm and only a few hundred yards from camp :yike: I sure wish I would have had a cow tag. saw a total of 7 elk. four the first day and three the next all cows! one of them was a super fat cow only at 150 yards just staring at us in the open for about 5 min before she ran off. first time I have seen elk in over 15 years. I also came out with a much healthier respect for the woods! I always knew that mother nature commands respect but I never thought about the simple things that could get you into a lot of trouble if you didn't have them. Such as a chainsaw to cut trees that may fall across your path on the way back or knowing how to use my gps and compass better than I do. You never realize that until you walk 50 yards of a trail think you see something get all excited and then look around and wonder where in the heck you are and have to stop and think and back track haha. Even though I didn't get an elk I wouldn't change a thing! I had an amazing time, made awesome new friends, and will never forget my first elk hunt! I cant wait till next year.
found this little tee pee out at the end of one of the roads. tied together and the top little fire pit. throw a tarp around it and your camping  :o I don't know if it was some survival training or what but it was pretty cool

Welcome to what Elk hunting is all about.  Killing an Elk is great, but just enjoying the hunt and the country elk live in is what it is all about.  The more you go and enjoy, the more you will begin to take your share of animals!! Get after them every chance you have and enjoy the experiences.

I saw that tee pee earlier this year.  My daughter thought it was cool and wanted to stay the night in it.

Haha didn't look to cozy in there! That's awesome you take your daughter hunting! I've been hunting with my dad since I was 11 and still do they are the best memories and I will never forget them. I can't wait till my 17 month old son is old enough to go hunting with dad! One guy walking along 1900 said there was a 6x7 skyline right off the road. We went to look but he wasn't there when we got there. We saw his cows the guy said was there but not the big boy.
