Shooting "Shot" from your muzzy
« on: April 22, 2016, 09:57:36 AM »
Anyone on hear ever fired a "Shot Load" out of your Muzzy. I remember my Uncle did years ago during the Turkey season and killed a nice bird. I think his was like a forty cal. I believe it was rifled and not a smooth bore.  Any thoughts? :dunno:

I have never tried it with mine, I have been told the rifled barrel will spin the shot out, and spray it out in a circular patter. I have never been told how far out the barrel before it gets too wide.

Yes.... If you are asking about shooting shot loads in your rifle,  the March/April issue of The Backwoodsman magazine did a complete detailed article on this topic . Includes charts with shot pellet count per load and  Equal Volume Load Data. Basically you make your own custom shot/cartridge cups by using file folder cardboard. Measuring 2 1/2" in width by 3 1/2" in length. Rolled on a 7/16 sized dowel (slightly smaller than bore size) and glued along the edge with white stick glue. The bottom was closed using the same stick glue & a cotton ball. The cup was then cut 1/3 of the way down to create four petals (like a plastic shot cup in modern shotguns). Cleaned with a patch after each shot as fouling effects patterns. Best results were obtained by:  Charge of black powder down barrel  then a lubed 100% wool wonder wad over powder then shot cup with shot & topped with 100% wool wonder wad over shot load.  Test results   101 out of 262 pellets or 38.5% on Target at 25 yards. Author mainly tried this as an option for Grouse & Rabbit .
