Legal Question
« on: March 09, 2016, 10:30:39 AM »
Pet stores sell live feeder rats for 4 bucks or cheaper sometimes.  Are there any legal reasons to not build a little cage at the end of a cage trap and put some live rats in there?  I bet no cat could avoid it and maybe even coyotes would be tricked into a cage trap.  The rats would be separate from the predators and could even have a drip water bottle and food to survive the night in comfort.  I got the idea from this photo I found somewhere on the internet where a live chicken had a cage and was used as bait.

So what's the legal question? I don't see anything wrong with the idea. Just make sure the live domestic "attractor" animal has shelter, food, and water. Domestic animals aren't under the purview of Fish and Wildlife accept when they are chasing game animals.

Like Wags said if it is domestic livestock perfectly all right with the trapping laws. You have to take reasonable good care of the animals though to keep from running afoul of animal cruelty laws.

Seems like I have read about the live bait attractant used in Oklahoma quite a bit. Not  real sure what laws they have that got them started on that.
I've considered it but it looks like a lot of hassle and the trap would be big and unwieldy. I've never followed through with building a trap for it.

I've been thinking of trying live chickens as bait for a while. I think they would work great for making the cats go in cages but the real advantage would be a that if you put in a rooster, his crowing every day would bring them from a good distance. Just find a little banny rooster and he would fit inside the cage real easy and wouldn't take much to keep him fed. I've wondered if it might also coax a coyote to actually go in a cage.  :dunno:

Of course the problem with that though is a human might hear it and go to investigate and take your trap.

It was talked about at the WCO class in Spokane in Jan. 14th. They didn't say if it was or was not legal, but it is in the works. She also said if you do use a animal it must have shelter, food, water, and switched out ever 24 hours. She said it is in the works so call Fish and Game.

I dont think it could really be considered "bait" if the target animal is unable to actually get to it to eat it.  I think as long as its kept out of reach of the target animal youd have a good argument that its just an "attractant"

Just how i see it,  but ive been known to have dumb ideas
