Not sure about POW but I believe it is usually four. The tags are $150 a piece last I checked and hunting license $90.

If there is a group that is interested in having Mike Jenkins as your cook, skinner, hunting companion which he knows a lot about Prince of Wales island and is a great guy which he can help with finding and judging Sitka Blacktails especially if you don't know much about them and hate for someone to pass up a trophy thinking they are bigger than they are. Non residents are allowed 4 deer

Looks like there are several outfitters offering DIY hunts out of Thorne Bay.  Prices all seem to be around 2 grand with pickups, and sometimes boats available, as well as the lodging.
I'd be very interested in a hunt like this, even an archery hunt.  Bear is draw only, but the deer licenses and tags can be bought online or upon arrival.

I was assuming the $2k didn't include the 4 tags.

:yeah:

I would venture to say in the end it would be closer to $4k by the time a guy figures in Air Fair, baggage costs, Tags, License, and such. But it is easier to spread out over time than just paying a guide $5k or more for other hunts.

Buy license, tags one month, Air Fair another, find out what baggage will cost to get your meat home save that one month, etc. $2k up front for four Deer is a little easier to palate compared to a Moose hunt in AK.  :twocents:

I have done this several times with my brother (he lives in SE AK) and with having family there it still cost me about $1500 or more and that is pitching in for food and fuel on top of Air Fair, and Tags etc.

I have a friend that lives in Sitka. You can walk down to the beach and shoot deer. The locals either drive the roads out of town and shoot deer or take a boat ride and shoot them on the beach. They are everywhere.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I'm not!

For the hunters that tag out early or they don't have a season like the bowhunters in late November early December you can hunt Sitka Blacktails in October & November. This is a great hunt I have hunted Prince of Wales a couple years in a row and encountered many bucks and huge Black Bears too
