how much to feed puppy
« on: May 04, 2016, 06:31:41 PM »
I have an 11 week old black lab puppy. Looking for advice on how much to feed him. At his last vet visit he weighed 19.8lbs. Feeding taste of the wild puppy formula. Bag says to give him 3.5 cups per day which seems like a lot of food. Opinions?

My lab pup was pretty ravenous too but I mostly held to the chart and she has turned out fine. Eventually she got to the point were she only eats when she is hungry so I just keep food in the dish and she isn't fat by any stretch. Then again she is only one year old.

Basically you are watching for the pups figure, they should be growing consistently. You always want to be able to feel their ribs and be able to see a defined waistline. You can modify how much you feed to control that. Also with young puppies feeding twice a day or even splitting it up to 3 times a day is recommended.

We always let puppies eat as much as they want for 10 minutes twice a day.
After they're a four or five months old we follow the schedule on the bag.

It was always changing for my pup. I kept him very active and he was and is still on the lean side even though he is on a 30/20 protein/fat food now. At 1 year when I switched him to the 30/20 he was getting 6 cups of large breed puppy food a day in 2 meals. I wouldn't try and compare it as everyone's puppy is different. Like it was mentioned feed him as much as he needs but don't over feed as you want them to grow nice and steady. I've heard stool consistency is a good indicator. Soft serve = too much. Pebbles = not enough but mimes always on the soft side as I'm always thinking he's under weight. He looks like a black gsp.

How many kcals are in a cup? Usually its on the back under or around where the ingredients are.

3 to 3 1/2 cups is probably about right but it really depends on how many calories.

I have found that watching the puppy's body build as well as energy levels helps dictate how much to feed them. Labs are notorious eaters and will eat until they puke. My last pup I fed 3.5 cups twice per day and that was perfect. Pup before was 2 cups twice per day. I think each dog is different  :twocents:
