Anyone spool mule tape directly on their ATV winch?
« on: August 03, 2016, 02:16:27 PM »
I've got to rebuild my warn 2500 on the ATV, the gear cap came loose and since I'll have it out I need to rebuild the brakes or just get a whole new unit.

Was thinking about swapping to a synthetic rope set up then was wondering how much mule tape I could spool on there  :dunno:

I got right at 400 ft on my chain saw winch. I am guessing you would get maybe half of that on an ATV winch.  :dunno:

Mule tape should work great for that application. Would also think you can get more tape on it than sythetic.?

I'm hoping for a good 200' spooled tight, that would more than tax the duty cycle on an ATV winch - even a warn  :chuckle:

I think that is a pretty good estimate.  :twocents:

We've tried mule tape with our capstan but have not had any luck. Let me know how your trial run goes, sure would be nice if you could make it happen somehow!

I bet it digs into the tape on the spool but that's just my guess.

Just curious. What do you use the winch for?
I bought my Polaris Sportsman new in 2000. It came with a Warn winch. I tried using it once to move a small log across the road. I hooked up to it and started winching.......My quad winched right up to the tree :chuckle:. I moved the log by hand and wound the cable back onto the spool. I have not used it again. But it looks really cool on the front of my quad. I have always wondered if there was a practical use for an ATV winch that could not be accomplished with a simple tow rope.
