Can you say deal of the day!!!! Score...........
« on: July 26, 2016, 02:25:21 PM »
Found an old Kamado no. 5 in Spokane complete and in good condition. Paid $125.00. For another $75 for refurbing like gasket, drill the dome for a thermometer and some firebox repair material I've got a medium big green egg on the cheap. Now I just need to pick it up.

Sorry, even if you paint it green it will never be a BGE.

I like them better than Green Eggs.  I used to buy, refurbish and sell about a dozen of them/year.  It got so that I was having too hard of a time buying them and I haven't done much w/them lately.

nomex gasket is the stuff guys are upgrading too. Google search it.

NRA, BGE's are a knock off of the Kamado, so you're right even if I could paint it green  it wouldn't be an egg. BTW I have 2 BGE's that I use a lot a medium and a large sitting side by side on a custom table I built this spring. The spring assist bands were good upgrades. My med is about 17 yrs old and the large about 12 so they were both pre spring assist bands.

It's always nice to have something the kids can start out on when they get their own places.

Cheers

Even better score when my daughter brought it home from Spokane, It's an no. 7. Same size as my large BGE. Has an iron top, ash tool, cover, 1966 Kamado Cookbook. Firebox is intact, actually mortared in which is good. the fire ring has a crack, the grate is busted but a BGE cast iron one will fit just fine. All I really need it the grate, new nomex felt gasket material and a thermometer to put into the dome. So my budget of $75. is really close. Prior owner didn't know about changing to lump charcoal from bricquests.

I picked up some gasket  material at a local wood stove store. Sorry I don't remember the brand. But only did the lower rim. Works great

A Komado is a chicken cooking demon.   used to stack up ribs in them and they were great.  I do ribs in an offset now, but for chicken... OMG a Kamado is the best.

My offset is about to die.  Probably going to buy a Horizon, but a Kamado is totally capable.

I'm going to have to take some measurements on the Kamado. If the BGE spring assist band will fit on it for another 90 dollars I'll be in  total upgrade city. Can't believe this one came over on the USS Lexington in 1966 from Japan with the original owner. Pretty cool knowing the history as it was kept in the same family until I purchased it.
