I was in the same boat when we went camping down there. What we did was is drive to the cottonwood campground and just walked up and down the river catching as many smallmouth as you can. With spinners or Carolina rigged plastics.....another place to check out is before the town of. Biggs junction coming from the dalles there are ponds along side the road that hold tons of smallmouth also in the bigger sizes....hopefully I'm not too late. Pm me if you have more questions
