Marlin 1889 38wcf
« on: September 03, 2016, 02:48:17 PM »
Because of health reasons my dad left all his guns with me last year. He is all healed up now but he only came and got his handguns. One of the rifles he left behind was my great grandfathers marlin 1889 38-40. This marlin 1889 has had a broken firing pin since i have been alive and i have always wanted to shoot it. So after a little internet searching i find a place here in Washington called Wisners. After a short phone call and a couple day wait it arrives. Super easy install and a little more waiting for ammo. This thing shoots every bit as good as my 1894 cowboy 45 colt, 1894 44 mag and 444.

Does it shoot a Black Powder cartridge?  Is it a specialized brass case that is hard to get your hands on?

I love the old lever guns especially the ones with the octagon barrel. cool gun to keep in the family!
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

Ammo is easy to get. Most factory ammo is low pressure for cowboy action pistols. New ammo is also smokeless.

If you choose to cast bullets for this gun you might slug it to determine barrel dia.  The barrel should be .400 and there's a Lyman 40143 that would fit the bill should you opt to go cast.

The common name is a 38-40 which is a misnomer as it actually takes a .40 caliber bullet. Ballistics wise, it's identical to the 40 S&W.

Cool rifle, my dad has an 1888 38-40 in his gun safe that I've shot a few times, very accurate old rifles.
