cant speak for anyone else but I have a lot of learning todo before I get to that level!

If any of you guys want a couple lawn mower blades to hammer into something, I just replaced mine on my riding lawn mower, they are free if you want them

LM blades would be good for lots, but not really knives, they're low carbon, they can't be too hard or they'll shatter.

what kind of things would they be good for?

Arts or crafts or steel equipment, fixtures, etc. Most things, just not stuff that needs to harden like tool and knife steel. That's why lawn mowers get dull so easy, they have to be soft or it'd be like a frag grenade going off anytime they hit a rock.

One of the jobs I held as a kid was a blacksmith. I built a small forge out of refractory brick and heated it with a propane weed burning torch. I drilled the jet a bit oversized so it was super rich. I welded a piece of stainless steel tubing that ended in the mixer cup and ran up the handle by the gas valve. I ran shop air to the tubing through a simple 1/4" needle valve. I had to get the forge warm and then I could start increasing air and fuel till I got to the point where I had 10 pieces of 7/8" 5150 about 24" into the forge. I had a 3x12" window to stuff into and it would have the bars from room temp to white hot in 10 minutes easily.

If I tried to come up on the air too soon it would put the flame out. It took about 5 minutes to get where I could throttle it up, but once hot....it was hot hot. We had a few other forges that were 4x10 feet in size that burned through several showerhead sized gas nozzles. The gas bill was nuts.

Well I decided I needed to expand my hobby of knife making from stone to steel to. I wont be forging from scrap for awhile. I will be working bar stock. I'm just about done with all my orders. I also got the stuff to do kydex for holsters and sheaths. So wish me luck. I wont get up and going probably tell fall because of hay and grain. I am going to get my forge built hopefully in the next few weeks.
