Model 96 44 mag info
« on: April 23, 2017, 05:16:44 PM »
Anyone have any info on these leaver action rifles? I picked it up for
300 bucks and from the research I did sounds like that was a good deal.
Figured it would be good trading stock to have

What do you want to know ? They are no longer in production . If its in halfway descent shape you got a good deal at $300 .

"Trading stock"is the operative word to remember.Dont shoot it but trade it asp. Many have had the stock break on the first shot as its made from birch and the Ruger people were trying to mimic the savage model 99.I have seen so many cracked 99's stocks that I'm convinced its a design flaw. There were a few guys making walnut stocks for the 96 ($150 range)but very hard to find now. Many aussies and kiwi's love them so maybe the export stock was better than the ones sold here.If it fails you will pay a high price to replace so just make it someone elses problem.Who knows,it might be one of the good ones that can hold up to 300 grain recoil without disintegrating.

I've read that the stocks are weak. It's in good shape just a little pitting on the leaver.
Were they all made with the cheap wood or were the earlier ones better? I think this one was made in 97
