We have 2 .243's in the house. We have killed about a dozen or so deer with them at ranges from point blank to 300 yards or so. I am a firm believer in the .243 but I don't think it's an elk cartridge.

Tikka compact in 7mm08, low recoil, deadly. comes with a stock spacer so a full size shooter can use it too.

I see your in selah.....maybe someone in the area can meet you and your wife at the range and let her try out a rifle??  If you are ever in the Wenatchee area look me up.  Your wife is welcome to shoot my wife and daughters Savage Lady hunters in .243 and 7mm-08.  I also have a light weight mountain rifle in .308 with a break if she wants to try that.....but the price of those mountain rifles can be pricey.
