Atv hours ?
« on: May 22, 2017, 07:42:45 PM »
My friends dad has a 2005 kawasaki brute force 750 4x4 in fair shape he said he would sell me for $1000 bucks . He has owned it since new . It has 847 hours on it , I'm not much of an atv guy . It seems to run and ride alright . But is 847 hours to much ? Should I stay away ? Any advice would be great . Thanks !

Those hours are very low. If he has taken care of it done the maintenance and not beaten the crap out of it then I would say you are getting a very fair deal.  This type of ATV is a work horse, unlike a banshee type which is meant to run at high RPM and race around.  I assume he was a mature rider and not beating the suspension and running at full throttle everywhere so if you treat it the same I would say take it.  If not send me some pics and I'll take it.   :chuckle:

Such a good engine v-twins!  Awesome deal.  Hours are a little high but not bad.  3500$+ machine at least.  Change the belt/fluids amigo!  Beast will be good to you.  You should probably send the seller a little more $ so as not to feel guilty.?

Run the numbers!

847 hours is a little over 35 days(24 hr) 106 days@8hrs 211days@4hrs 424 days@2hrs

2005 makes it 12 years old,  35+ days versus  4380 days :yike:

My folks sold their low hour atvs. They sat alot and as such developed some leaks. Check/change all the fluids and keep an eye on that.... It's a steal for sure.

It was old man owned and used for hunting and property mantinence . i rode it home . it has alot of power but its lacking in high gear . he said it did the same thing years ago until he had the carb rebuilt .(showed me the reciepts lol ) so im hoping its just that . but it fires right up and runs great but wont go faster than like 25 mph .

850-900 hours is actually a lot, like really a lot, for an offroad machine, but of course it depends how it was ridden. It's not the same as a car or truck. A lot of offroad machines are needing engine rebuilds ~300 hours or even less when they're used for fun. Only 900 miles is really low though, and probably a better indication of the condition.

Even if it needs work though, still a great deal.

vtwin 2 carbs?  If its fuel injected that's better.  Not easy to tune 2 carbs.  Not sure if that's the case.  I would first replace fuel filters and air filter and plugs before messing with carbs. :twocents:

I would get the carbs rebuilt, dump the fuel, and only use non ethanol from now on.  Will take care of any future carb issues

It is also possible a speed limiter is malfunctioning?  Not real familiar with that quad but often limiters are on low range and diff lock and reverse and e brakes.  Something to think about?  Usually engine will skip at top speed and bog and sputter if its fuel.

I'd be changing the plugs and air filter, and make sure the CVT drive is working correctly. With the hours and miles reported, that thing probably spent most of the time idling or moving at very low speed, so the CVT may not be shifting all the way into the high end, could be a little rust, gunk, or just stiff old grease/oil.
