Scouting during archery season
« on: August 23, 2017, 10:18:30 PM »
As a new hunter I have tons of dumb questions that probably have simple answers and might not be of any concern but...  just wondering if there are common etiquette mistakes to watch out for while scouting deer areas in September for rifle season.  I don't want to piss off a hunter by trampling through an area he's been hunting.  Assuming an archery hunter will be tucked in waiting in ambush.  How does one keep from stumbling through a fellow hunters prime area

Just don't wear antlers on your head and rustle around in the brush and you'll be fine :chuckle:

I wouldn't worry too much about it.  Stay clear if you see vehicles parked in the immediate where you intend to scout, at least if it is a small area.  If it is a gated road with vehicles there, just go for it, but try to be relatively quiet as you scout.  There's just as much chance that you push animals towards another hunter as away.  Do unto others.....

If I see one truck parked at a turn out, it might be someone hunting. Depends on what kind of scouting you are doing. People bump into each other on public land. I've walked up on tree stands and had people walk right past me without even knowing I was there. You might even be helping a guy by bumping the deer towards them. If I see a set up I try to back out and move. I've been where I thought was a good off trail spot and had a guy come play fetch with his dog right in front of me. Go mid week if you can. Be as considerate as you can.

Yea as fishnfur said "Do others and they will do you".

I wouldn't worry about it at all.Buy a bear tag and take your rifle. If you see someone parked at gate just park there and go on in,behind most gates there's plenty of land for a few hunters, see someone on a low road , then take the high road.
There are a lot of seasons that open up Sept 1, and more than enough woods for everybody,Go anytime you want on public land its there for everybody, not just bowhunters, you can be kinda good ,no target practice where you know someone is hunting, slaming truck doors, some things help, take a shotgun kill a few grouse and scout,i wouldn't even blink an eye about someone else hunting.

You Sir are a good man  Very nice of you to think of the "other guy"

As a bowhunter it is kinda frustrating sometimes when trying to do our thing and some folks are out shooting up a storm, etc.  As others have said, be considerate when around possible hunters and enjoy your scouting....the woods belong to all of us.
