10MM Non-woods load?
« on: October 25, 2017, 09:39:45 PM »
So for you all with glock 20 specifically (because that's what I have) or others with a 10mm semi-auto, what do you choose when not in the woods.
As a self-defense/home defense round?

After looking through all the gel tests, unsurprisingly gold dots are looking like my best option.
Underwood makes a 180gr 1300fps gold dot with perfect penetration
Underwood also makes a ridiculous 135gr nosler 1600fps which under penetrates a but moves so damn fast and has the most ridiculous temporary wound cavity. (And if you find the right video it completely evaporates and entire pineapple)

Those 2 seem to be the best option other than some of the "FBI lite" loads that have good penetration and performance but are just so weak and lame for a 10mm (like the 175 critical duty)

Anywho what do you guys choose?

Does it matter? I wouldn't want to get hit with a .22LR Stinger let alone a 10mm. People over think things, human beings are total wusses when it comes to taking a hit. Velocity is key, for factory two legged loads. Corbon is hard to beat.

I've always liked the double tap 180's. I've been using HSM 180's lately and they absolutely suck, little to no expansion or shock.

Mine is a dedicated woods gun so it just sits when not in the woods, but I did get a lone wolf  .40 s&w barrel for it I use with the stock recoil spring.  It cycles fine.  Only did that because I have a lot of .40 sitting around, but it would be a cheaper option for practicing.

Agree with bighammer that it doesn't matter for home defense. Your average burglar isn't coming in wearing body armor.

I use Sellier & Bellot 185 grain FMJ rounds for target loads. $18 for 50 rounds at Sportco. Thats the cheapest I have ever found for 10mm bullets. I run Underwood 200 grain lead cast for bear if the opportunity arises. Both would do fine for 2 legged creatures.

I'd personally stay away from Double Tap. They lied about their advertised FPS.

I used Gold Dot, 200 gr, GDHPs, they shot well.

I wouldn't want to start shooting a 10mm hot load through the house walls.  Yes Yes I know you're the best shot that ever lived (aren't we all?) but even the best shot that ever lived is probably going to miss the bad guy with a few rounds when lead starts flying, a hot 10mm will go through a lot of interior walls of a house and even exterior walls and into the neighbors house across the street.

Besides the bystander danger of the 10MM, I would be concerned that letting off a full-house round indoors would be blinding and deafening.

Truthfully, I'm considering getting one of those keltec jobs that holds 30 rounds of .22mag, for my bedside pistol instead of the 9mm I have now.

not sure those are reliable enough for a self defense gun, partially the gun, and rimfire just isn't as reliable as centerfire is.

Just found a perfect one,
Doubletap has a 125gr Barnes tac xp that goes 1400-1500fps and expands consistently in bare gel, T shirt on gel and 4 layers denim on gel. And it penetrated perfect too, 12-14 inches

You're talking about the PMR30, I have one and they are a lot of fun to shoot, especially now that 22mag ammo is readily available.  Not sure how well it'd be for personal defense though, and you want to talk about deafening, they are VERY loud.

It ok, it was back before we all became experts at what should or should not be used for self defense in the home.
