Calls? Scents? Blacktail Recommendations Please
« on: October 25, 2017, 08:56:05 AM »
So I've been using the "great big can" estrus bleat. in the rain it doesn't seem to loud.  Curious as to what everyone uses for blacktail. Looking to pick up some estrus urine as well. How do you guys scent an area?
has anyone used the "estrus fogs"?  read they spread out to an 1/8 of a mile! all in all  I am spending late season in the woods and want to attract a buck to an area I've seen two does in.

Thanks
Steve

You can find discussions on how I use Primos Can Call herein.  Search earlier posts here.

We use fawn distress to get does to come in when we have antlerless tags to fill.  Works great, does will come in all pumped full of adrenalin and ready to save the world and have had them attack our predator caller before when coyote hunting.  That is how we came up with that trick.  I don't know what brand the mouth blown we have is, I bought it somewhere and can't find another like it on the internet or in stores.  Anyone of them is probably good, I suspect a CritterCall would turn the trick if you are good w/an open reed.

If you are using a fawn in distress you might get your butt kicked by a doe if you are not vigilent.  Just a word of warning.  They come in thoroughly PO'd and if you are camoed up they may be on you before they figure out the score.

We have had some success using Moccasin Joe Blacktail Doe Estrus urine, put in pill bottles w/cotton and uncap it and put it out in front of stand or blind ONLY during rut though.

Thanks for the tips! I'm assuming late buck might be past rut? ( Nov 16-19)
Was curious if the mouth/ manual calls were better than the primo cans. time to hit youtube... if i do not take a buck...fist fighting a doe sounds like an epic adventure too.

I actually had a small buck come in behind me last week after tipping a Primos can.  That is a first, after ten thousand uses.

Urine scents make good sense (play on words  :chuckle:) but they are hit and miss.  Mostly miss in my book.  Several people have told me they've had positive results with Moccasin Joe's BT doe in estrous.  When I open them, they smell like pee that some drunk left in a parking lot elevator three days ago.  MJ's urine is WT urine, don't be fooled by the BT name.  It's not sealed from the environment, and when pee is exposed to O2, it breaks down and has the characteristic odor.  Classic uses are applying it to a drag rag tied to a string hanging off your boot, then either walk a several hundred yard long figure 8 centered on the place your hiding or have a tree stand, or (per one of the great hunters on the forum) walk the perimeter inside of a clear cut before first light and then hide on the uphill side where you can see deer follow the scent trail.  Rattling adds to the effect. The idea with both of these is that they pick up the scent and follow the trail to where you're hiding.  There is no doubt that this works on occasion, perhaps infrequently, but there are plenty of success stories.

Doe urine is expensive, but if you decide to put your money down for some, I'd suggest a sealed bottle like Tinks, or Wildlife Research Center Special Golden Estrous.  The latter comes with wicks that you dip and hang from a branch so the wind can do it's work.  It's up to you to figure out the setup so that you are sideways of the downwind side of the wick.

Some states have enacted laws restricting the use of urine scents.  There is some question whether they may contribute to the spread of hemmorhagic  deer diseases.  We definitely don't want that, so containing or minimizing the ground contact of the urine seems reasonable.

I've had good results with a Moccasin Joe product, but remember to read the directions. In order for any of these attracting scents to work, the season has to be right and there needs to be a chance your desired target is in position to inhale the vapors. You can't expect to spray product X on the ground at a random location, sit back for ten minutes and bag a trophy. Did you scout the area to ascertain the location of daytime bedding areas? Is it an appropriate season for the product you are releasing? Are the deer detecting your scent at the same time you're hoping they'll come running to investigate what you sprayed on the ground?

I've twice used a Moccasin Joe product and twice attracted antlered deer. I'm impressed. In both cases, antlered deer approached down wind of my location to investigate products I released into the wind. The bucks were obviously attracted, but my foul odor passed over their noses because I was 20 feet up in a tree. I believe bucks are attracted to this product, but there must be bucks down wind of where it's applied.

During the rut they come straight to the scent bottle and don't mess around.  We have played "hide the bottle" and if they hit on it they follow their nose straight to it.

ive scouted and know a handful of trails used. fresh poop and two does. I'm using a Primos big can and watched a video on them yesterday leading me to not want to use it... simply due to it sounds more like an alarm call then anything else. i will be picking up a manual mouth one  after watching some videos on people communicating and almost talking/ teasing bucks with them. thinking of grabbing some rattlers too seeing as this wont be the last time i hunt deer.

You might try amazon or another online source.
Best of luck.
