Got the male...
« on: January 13, 2018, 07:48:21 PM »
...and he  already had a new bitch!

I went back to where I got the female in the fog, a few days ago, set up in the same spot, did some coyote sounds, and got nothing.  Moved over the next ridge, about 300 yards farther, and tried again.

Went through more coyote sounds, and after several minutes, I threw out a fawn distress or two.  In just a couple minutes, I had a hard charger coming in, and as I shifted the rifle to get on it, noticed another that had stopped short.  As the lead coyote dropped from view in a depression, and my next view of it would be point blank, I dropped the stationary animal.

The other coyote reappeared, running back past the downed one, and I got on it, until it finally stopped.  At my shot, it bolted immediately over a rise.  I searched for a half hour or more, but couldn't find it.

After pacing the dead coyote at 260, it computes to a 300 yard plus shot on the second, which would have caused some bullet drop from my .222.  Most probably a clean miss.

The good news it the male that I got was a 35 pound adult, with a thick heavy coat.  A really nice pelt on this one.

Nice!

How sure are you that it was the same male?

(Not trying to argue.....    You obviously know more about coyotes than I do.   I'm just curious.)

Thanks.

I have no idea!...not even sure there was a male....it's pure conjecture, of course.  I said that jokingly.
