Washington's Fish and Wildlife Commission needs your support

Early in February, we warned you about Senate Bill 5127, an attempt to silence your voice in Washington’s fisheries management by gutting the Fish and Wildlife Commission’s authority to manage our fisheries.  Despite your overwhelming opposition as shown by your 4,600 e-mails and letters, this dangerous bill has passed out of the Natural Resources Committee and was actually made worse.

Attached is a comprehensive summary of the specific changes Substitute Senate Bill (SSB) 5127 would enact.  The goal of SSB 5127 is to take power from the people of the state and the Commission and centralize it in one committee of the Senate in order to better serve influential commercial fishing interests.   These same interests are pushing this bill through so they can reverse the science and conservation-based approach of your current Fish and Wildlife Commissioners.

The vote of the people formed the Fish and Wildlife Commission.    Not only would SSB 5127 end the Fish & Wildlife Commission as you know it, but the bill contains an emergency clause that prohibits citizens from gathering signatures to put it on the ballot for a vote of the people.  Does this sound like they respect democracy?  Are they looking out for you or the needs of the resource?

Do not allow this power grab by a select few succeed in undoing the Commission or your ability to have a say in the management of our fish and wildlife resources.   You can sit by and watch, or you can make your voice be heard.  Click on the link below to take action now!

Whats your thoughts on this Billy? I guess I need to read the Bill and see what it entails. Being the commission is made up of people who are actually in the business or do alot of fishing and or hunting they are supposedly suppose to have our best intrests in mind. Would be nice to have a person or two on the commission give some input.

That is why I posted it. I wanted someone to give me an opinion. LOL

Actually, I need to read it to see what it is all about. But I thought I would share, or give a heads up here.

In reality its probably bad for the sporty as all meetings even with the commercials will be closed door. It may however make it more difficult for the natives to do as they please.

at a higher level it may make the Fed's take more glances this way too. IMO the commision was usaually commercial bias anyway. Half are old gill netters from the SW. Why do you think the meetings for the lower Columbia are in Cathlamet.

These are my first thoughts on this.
I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me to.

This is my first post on this forum and I apologize for the political nature to it, but it is necessary.  Senate Bill SSB 5127 will infact hurt all sportsmen and women.  The Fish and Wildlife Commission has finally begun to swing in the direction of proper conservation and management of at least our fisheries.  They have heeded the $20,000,000 scientific review that we the taxpayers payed for.  Selective harvest is the right way to go in our fisheries, but the commercial fishermen want no change, just wish to continue fishing with their dinosaurs (GILL NETS), which are killing off our native runs, fish do not swim very well after an encounter with them.  The above Bill is not the only culprit, just in case that does not work they have SSB 5588 flying under the radar introduced by three senators, It will suspend the commission and turn over all direction to the Director I think.  There was a recent meeting in El lensburg where Ed Owens told you that removing the commission was the only way for you to go.  Remember that this guy represents nearly all commercial fishing interests in WA, and maybe Ore to.  I do believe this guy follows the money and his silvery tongue is not afraid of doubletalk.  At one of the Senate Natural Resources meetings, I remember most of the room laughing at him.  I also remember the Macaw fisheries manager, and the Indian fisheries commission member being allowed to talk freely while our CCA Representative was cut short, and at another meeting  our registered lobbies was not allowed to speak.  In 2007 Ed Owens told you to support the commission, and now two years later he is going the other way.  How has the commission hurt you the hunters.  If it has I am willing to be schooled.  If you think fishing is bad now in Washington, wait a few years with the fishing run entirely by Dag, and overharvest will continue and you can finally rest when the last fish is caught.  For a great example you only need to look at the Chelhalis Basin fisheries.  It is the second largest river system in Washington, and some creeks have more fish coming back, a slight ex ageration but you get the point I think.  Thank you for allowing me to vent and I hope it helps you all to make up your minds.  Please call your Senators and Representatives  and voice your opinion.  Mine is PLEASE VOTE NO
