Two first birds
«
on:
April 30, 2018, 06:51:44 AM »
I'm not going to lie, but I'm the worst turkey hunter. It's taken me years, lots of gas to all corners of the state, lots of hens or questionable jakes called in. This year though, it's paying off. I now have multiple areas that are public with birds, and also secured some private land which I've yet to hunt but has birds.
Youth opener was wet, we got into birds before the rain started but spooked them. Came back the next morning and got three toms and 9 hens to come into 90 yards, then the left. We circled around them and they walked into us. Son took the Tom with a single 30 yd shot.
3 weeks later, we came back, same area, got into birds but no toms. Decided to hit my backup area, and immediately started seeing single toms. One ran down the road, so i got out and went around the hill, and did some some calling. Pulled 3 toms out of the brush and picked this one. One shot and I sighed, "Finally". I am the most unlucky turkey hunter, with the most experience.... Hopefully this is a sign of things to come...

Congrats on sealing the deal. Nothing wrong with those birds as your guy's first long beards!

All those unsuccessful hunts, gallons of gas, lots of miles - consider it like paying dues.
You've paid them, now your starting to reap the benefits!
It's all downhill from here on out, congratulations to both of you.

Your success may have taken a while but it gives hope to guys like me still chasing our first turkeys. The learning curve seems to be steeper for some of us.

Yeah, Keep the faith! This has been a 20 yr quest. Not all my trips were in areas i consider even adequate. However i do now know places that Rios exist, and Easterns as well, on public land. Big oil loves me! I still have some learning to do but i know I've "rounded the corner" in the learning curve. Having a son that is almost driving age will also help on the weekend warrior trips!
