Gut piles
« on: June 28, 2018, 07:56:26 PM »
With caution I am asking this question hoping I am not too naive.

I do a lot of scouting for possible hunt sights, it gives me an excuse to be outside. At abut 50% of the access points in Mason and Thurston counties on to either state or commercial lands, I am finding gut piles. Some are just piles of bones, others are entire carcases or what is left after scavenging. They are most often either an elk or a deer, though I have seen piles of small rib bones.

I understand some of it is natural predation. But why would someone leave a carcass at a gate? :dunno:?

I can think of a couple reasons. Laziness, sloth, slobs, convenience. I understand the need to dispose of the carcass of the animal you kill, but leaving it where other people have to put up with the smell and the visual assault is very inconsiderate and I think it gives people a bad impression about hunters. It doesn’t take that much effort to dispose of it at least out of sight.

I've seen those too and my guess is that it is road kill.

Some agency is picking them up off the roads and being lazy about dumping them.

I don't think it is poachers or hunters. They look dumped and not processed.

Theres a spot out in cinnebar that when you are heading into the mountains you will drive by and it is littered with bones and come hunting season there will also be a ton of guts. I don't understand tossing it all right next to the road. Like what was said, laziness, slob, sloth, etc...

I don't think what he is seeing is from hunters.

I've seen them in capitol forest throughout the year.

The placement is too close to the road to be hunters. There are much better places to clean a deer and if you cleaned it in the woods then there is no point in taking the carcass to the road.

These are deer being killed somewhere else and then dumped at the entrances. Maybe poachers but it seems really lazy which is why I would guess it to be road kill. I don't see poachers hanging out that close to the entrance.

Road kill salvage carcass would be my guess. Folks scrape one up, salvage what they can and dump the rest at the closest dirt road.

I wouldn't rule out poachers though. I've seen a ton of that lately.
