First double of the season. Did an afternoon hunt, which I rarely do, and it worked out fine.
Hiked in about 3'/4 mile, and set up on a ridge with a cross wind, a bit of a breeze, backed up to a low bush. Started right in with a pup distress/ki-yi, with a mouth call. About five minutes in, I see a coyote trot out on a ridge, about 200 yards away, and almost directly upwind. He sits down, and I just waited for a couple of minutes. Then I gave a little squeak, and he heads my way.
I could see that if I stayed where I was, the coyote would next appear about twenty feet away, so I moved forward to where I could see to the bottom of the draw. The last I saw of the coyote, he was still coming, and was in the bottom of the draw. Then, suddenly, he headed back the way he had come, looking my way....he had spotted me moving. I did a vocal bark, and he stopped, facing away from me, but looking over his shoulder. The cross hairs just naturally settled on his neck, so I went with it, and he folded.
I continued to call for another five to ten minutes, then just sat quietly for a few minutes more. I was just about to stand up, when I saw the second coyote approaching the dead one....where she came from, I have no idea. She stopped a couple feet away from him, sniffing, and I anchored her.
The picture shows them exactly where they dropped. Range was 130 paces, .222 Remington with factory Remington 50 gr soft points. No exit on either animal.
Nice!
