Rifle or Scatter gun?

What is your choice for the field? Or both? Depending on the cover I will take both. I will always take a rifle, but if the cover is heavy Sage to wear it's 40yds or less I will take the shotgun with some 9 pelt #4.

When I get into areas where shots can be close I usually carry a combo gun or German drilling, that way I have both and only have to carry one weapon because it always seems you have the wrong one in your lap with two.

Drilling in 16ga/16ga/6.5x58R  1 oz of NP BB's wreaks havoc on coyotes inside 40 yard ,  90gr Speer does nicely at 200+ yards.



The combo guns 12ga/5,6x50R Magnum and 12ga/22 Savage High power 40 and under with a 1 1/4oz of NP BB's  and 52-55 gr bullets puts them in mortal danger at 300 yards.

That sounds like a nice set up. Ive got two. Ones a .22/20 & the other is a 17/20. Just seems like the 20ga would be a little light for dogs past 10yds. Where do you find hi power ammo? I have 2, ones a break down but I can't find ammo so I never use them. Sweet coyote caliber.

Buffalo arms carries 45, 55 and 60gr .228 bullets to reload for it.  I load their 55gr bullets for coyotes.

Factory Hornady 70gr .228's can be a little long to stableize in the 99's some guys shorten them by filing off the tip to get them to stablize.

Rifle for me.  Twice I have gunned coyotes with the shotgun, and they both ran off.  However, the past few weeks,I have had a few inside forty yards, that I never got on with the rifle.

Thanks AWS, I will certainly check them out. Shotgun can be quicker at times. The way you kill them wolftrapper you would have to pull a wagon just to get everything back out of the field!

A rifle is a rifle no matter what the configuration.  I have one of those(1894 CL) in 218 Bee.  I actually find open sights to be slower than a 1-4x20mm scope that is set up well on a the rifle.   I'm too old to pack two guns, if I don't have a combo gun in the truck, my little 222 Sako or 222 Modele70 with a 1-4x20/24 scope on 1x runs a very close second to a shotgun and still have the ability to knock a coyote off the hillside a couple hundred yards away.

On your lever action, try XS Ghost Ring Sights and you will find it just as  fast as a scope or faster! You focus on front sight and eye centers automatically in rear ghost ring. Works well in thick cover.

Been there done that, shot receiver sights from the 1950's on until the late 1970's when I got my first 1.5-4x20mm scope.  In the woods we'd pull the apertures out, same as a ghost ring.

Great combo guns can be found for considerably less

Bernardelli 5.6x50R(approx 222 Rem Mag with rim for positive extraction)/12ga right at $1K like new Killed alot of coyotes with it.  $1K



BRNO 22 Sav. Highpower(30-30 necked to .228)/12ga  $495 with scope mount, it is my travel gun shooting Sub-MOA groups to 300 tards with the 1-4 scope on it.  Plus it has a set of O/U 12ga barrels to go with it.



There are a number of Tikkas, Valmets, BRNO, CZ's out there for under $1K

What is your load for the 22 Highpower?  A matched set of 12g barrels would be a huge plus!

AWS helped me a lot and showed me some good resources when I was looking to buy. Now I’m tossing around buying another! But up until the combo I just carried a rifle but with see through scope mounts or offset irons. If 2 of us were going one carried a rifle and the other a shotgun.

I use 55gr Buffalo Arms .228 bullet with 4895 powder.  I use 219 Zipper load data(keep them mild) for a guideline plus some old data from the book "Pet Loads" it does shoot well.

Thanks AWS.  I've been eyeballing those 22 Highpowers and 222Rimmed but have not looked into what to feed them.
Being able to use 30-30 brass would help.

222 Rimmed can get a little tougher than the 22 HP.  Bertram makes 222 Rimmed(spendy), you can make it from 5.6x50R Mag(brass from Huntington's) and 357 Maximum ( think they come up a scoash short but workable.
