Hug A Hunter: Changing Public Perceptions of Hunting Around the World

Quote
Hunters in Colorado and Michigan, and the Wildlife Councils in the two states, teamed up with the Nimrod Society to develop successful pro-hunting public relation programs. Compelling messages and arguments on shared values resonated best with nonhunters. This initiative provides a model for hunters throughout the world to successfully encourage a positive view of hunting in public opinion.

Pro-hunting PR programs in two U.S. states provide a model for how hunters throughout the world can successfully influence public opinion

This reminds me of something on my to-do list. We need to push the legislature to make WDFW use a portion of the PR funding and/or license sales to do something like this here in Washington.

Can PR funds be used for Public Relations?

Good plan, could they also add a box to check for donations when we buy licenses? If hunters started seeing these commercials I think they might be willing to donate.

Perhaps for a dedicated cause. Not a general donation.

In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

I'd rather see this supported in the private sector. It always costs us more when the government handles our money.  :twocents:

I can't even remotely fathom the idea of wdfw promoting hunters in a positive light.  Nor can I imagine any hunters I know, handing over monies to wdfw for the purpose of show casing the good in hunters as a group.

WDFW is a long, long ways from deserving the necessary trust of hunters.  A venture into this type of public awareness would have to be from an entity completely removed from wdfw.

As I understand the approach (and admittedly I need to go back and review the legislative mechanisms and flow/control of funds), the funds are essentially a set-aside account that's not necessarily under the oversight pervue of the governing agency (outside of auditing and very small percentage limit attributable towards admin cost accounting).  Need to review and have a conversation with them again.

There is a lot of opportunity to work with WDFW on improving relations with hunters and anglers.  We've got a "good guy" as a Director in the drivers seat right now.  Let's make hay while the sun is shining.

A pet project I'm working on is getting a carbon copy of SCIF's American Wilderness Leadership School established here in Washington.
