Just curious what made you switch? I've gotten the south every year since they started always debated doing the north as well.

One thing I noticed going from South to North....very different terrain  :twocents: Both hold animals though.

I didnt get online in time for the south permits.they sold out too fast.  I grew up in Boisfort so I know it way better.  I've hunted both.  Looking forward to learn some new territory from doty all the way to Raymond.

Just a tip cause that happened to me as well this year. But since they only give people 30 minutes to complete the purchase...if you check back at 730 ish there was like 40 permit available then again at like 8ish there was like 8 to 10 that came back up for sale this year.... I've probably met you down there at some point over the years my family's been hunting that area since they used to ride the trains in with the loggers.

What do you guys think of the walk-in permits ? Before the permits where required I used to walkin to a couple of the roads on the south unit... do you thing a guy still has a chance to get into some areas to find animals ?  Or is the drive in permit the ticket anymore ?

Good luck! IMO north is a better "all around permit" , but south is the "elk" permit.

Fire guy, IMO only I think the walk ins are mostly a waste. Although some areas are gated to all motorized access.( Vail has some areas like that) . The majority of the unit will be competing with vehicles access. I would look for areas under 3 ish miles from a access, preferably one that is a good ways from one of the recreational access points and start there.

I'll just say before the permits were available that's all we could do is hike in after the flood happened.  We've killed alot of deer and a ton of elk within 1 mile of 2 of the main drive in gates in the south. Couple years ago dumb luck struck we drove in behind the lions park main gate with an hour left of daylight opening day of elk season in our camp clothes killed a legal bull in the clearcut next to the y. The animals are around. If I didn't get a driver's permit I'd be buying a hike in. Just my  :twocents:

Ya u got lucky.  I dont wanna start hiking in just to have hunters drive by me all day.  Both units are covered with roads.  I was just looking at a map and there is no roadless area.  Kind of disappointing.  That's in the north permit area

The thing about alot of those critters is let those trucks drive by then they pop out. I wouldn't let trucks driving by discourage you. I've taken many animals right after a vehicle passed. You do get the occasional guy drives around the corner and shoots one in front of you that sucks sometimes

I agree with this. I’ve seen a lot of animals after being dropped off. Sometimes it seems like a vehicle leaving gives you a little cover

To many roads in these units imo.  Now if there was some gated stuff u could walk back in with no traffic it would be worth it imo.

That's pretty much all we hunt is behind gated roads walking in.  There's alot of neighboring timber land that's open to the public but closed to vehicle's.  You just gotta drive in like 20 miles to get to gates. I'll be curious how you like the north compared to the south.

My hunting crew (Dad, Grandpa, and myself), all got pe ell north. Had it once before two years ago but due to work was unable to really use it. Looking forward to hunting season! Hoping it helps with my multi season deer tag
